• An INSEAD press release reports on the international b-school’s new dual degree MBA/MA program in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). The joint MBA/MA program will allow students to complete both degrees simultaneously “with the aim of preparing [them] for careers that combine international affairs and business administration.” For more information on the new 2.5-year program, please see the press release or the Financial Times article, “Insead adds international relations to its portfolio.”
• U.K. business schools may suffer due to Britain’s new visa restrictions, reports a BusinessWeek article, “Visa Rules May Spell Trouble for U.K. MBAs.” Effective next year, international students attending b-schools in the U.K. will need to leave the country shortly after completing their degree program, leaving not much time to find a job. With a shortage of flexible work visas, many b-schools fear that their international population may choose to attend business school elsewhere. Some programs, however, remain optimistic. Fiona Sandford, London Business School’s director of career services, looks at the revised visa rules as a positive development: Most students find jobs before they graduate anyways, she says, so the new rules will really only affect a small percentage of students. “While graduates will no longer get unrestricted access to the labor market for two years after graduation, it has become much, much simpler for any company that wants to hire a London Business School graduate to do so,” says Sandford.
• In another recent BusinessWeek article, Francesca Di Meglio explores the benefits provided by part-time MBA programs. She writes that while it takes longer for part-timers to see their return on investment than it does for full-time MBA students, many part-time students are expressing that there are real benefits (including ROI) to attending a part-time program. One reason for this increased satisfaction is the increased role b-school career centers have taken in securing their graduates with jobs.
