Scoring high marks in tests is expected of good students. When it becomes a competitive examination it becomes all the more necessary. Students taking the GMAT are generally considered capable scoring high. In any case, only students with high gmat scores can have any hope of getting admission to any of the top Business schools. Any score which is less than 80% overall, means that the student has to think of going for retest. The marks scored in the quantitative and verbal sections of the test are considered individually for the admission process. A number of factors other than academic qualification enter the picture.
Preparing for GMAT reading comprehension
The format of the admission test is quite interesting. It is divided in to three sections. One section has quantitative questions, the second has verbal questions and the third is the analytical writing assessment. The quantitative and verbal are further divided in to two sub sections. The verbal section has sentence correction and GMAT reading comprehension. Scoring high in this subsection will help in the overall score of the section which has about 40 questions. Great talent is expected to perform well in the comprehension test. The best way to improve is to look for good question material and teachers.
Testing one’s reading comprehension has to be done a number of times when preparing for the admission test. It is not only the correct answers to the questions that matter, a specific time is allotted for every question and it has to be answered within the time. Method suggested while preparing for the test is to work on the computer as if on a test and go on answering without looking at time taken. This exercise has to be repeated several times. Eventually the student can feel satisfied only if he is able to answer all the questions correctly within the time allotted.
Good manager and gmat critical reasoning
The quantitative questions of the test have two sub sections and one of them relate to problem solving. Analytical writing assessment will also involve gmat critical reasoning. In fact, a person’s managerial abilities depend greatly on his ability to solve problems that are brought to him by those working with him. Problem solving means decision making that will lead to the resolution of the problem. The solution has to be based on facts and the managers’ critical reasoning ability will enable him to put them all together in the correct perspective and come out with the solution.
Critical reasoning will require total objectivity devoid of any personal element like preferences, prejudices, bias etc. This ability is inborn in some people but is also cultivated through proper training. The power to analyze any situation from various angles is the crucial element underscoring critical reasoning. Some may have found the correct solutions through intuitive methods but is not always possible on such methods. Some of the decisions and solutions arrived at by critical reasoning may not be palatable to all but these decisions are correct in the interest of all concerned. A good manager will not hesitate to announce his decision if it is backed by critical reasoning and analysis.
