National Black MBA Association and other opportunities

National Black MBA AssociationBlack History Month allows everyone the opportunity to reflect on the storied history and impact of the African diaspora around the world. In case you were not aware, the annual observance is not exclusive to the United States—it is also officially observed during the month of February in Canada and Germany. Additionally, the United Kingdom celebrates Black History Month in October.

February also marks a waiting period for many b-school applicants. With most Round 2 deadlines passed, awaiting word on acceptance is all that remains in the long process of applying to business school. That also means that February is a great time to look forward to the fall! While you might not yet know where you will be come August or September, chances are you may well be starting your graduate school career and it is critical you make the very best of it.

There is more to b-school than classes. Getting involved outside the classroom will expose perhaps half or more of the value of your MBA degree. One organization that ought to be on your radar is the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA). Whether you are of African descent or not, NBMBAA is a fantastic outfit and one any MBA student could look to partner with or join.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of members (88%) are black, but this is certainly not a requirement of membership. Further, even if you are not interested in joining NBMBAA, partnerships among student organizations to work toward a common goal will increase and augment successful initiatives.

While there is a somewhat expansive coast-to-coast inventory of NBMBAA chapters (see this link for a full list), just 28 chapters currently exist nationwide. Thus, there may well be an opportunity for some of you reading this blog entry to be a founder at your future institution.

Finally, particularly for those still in undergrad, but also to make sure scholarship opportunities are on everyone’s mind, here is a list of eleven noteworthy scholarships associated with Black History Month. Each opportunity on this list has a deadline in February so check them out now and toss your hat in. Also, be sure to surf and check back often the website these came from: https://www.scholarshipsonline.org/. There is no better money than the free kind!
