The Berkeley-Haas EMBA 2015 Application

Berkeley-Haas’ EMBA application rings similar to last year’s application, and even similar to the full-time MBA application.

The Haas EMBA application consists of 5 main parts: score reporting, online application, essay questions, letters of recommendation and sponsorship letter.

Like any MBA program, Haas’ EMBA application will ask you some simple base questions, such as to explain gaps in your employment, whether you have ever been subject to academic discipline, and what your current job and duties are. This is all fairly self-explanatory. The key is to make sure your answers are well-written and articulate. Always triple-check for grammar, spelling and periods.

Unlike many of today’s top EMBA programs, Haas still requires all applicants to provide GMAT or GRE scores and there are zero waivers to exempt applicants from this requirement. If you want to go to Haas, you are taking the GMAT/GRE. Scores can be from as far back as October 2009. Similarly, all applicants who received their degrees from outside the US will be required to provide TOEFL/IELTS scores.

Although each section of the application should be completed meticulously, the essay questions are often viewed as the most time-consuming. Haas EMBA requires 3 essays, listed below:

Question 1. At Berkeley-Haas, the following four Defining Principles describe our unique culture and are exemplified in our student body. Please select one of the following principles and give a brief explanation of how you have exemplified this in your life (250 word maximum).

A. Question the Status Quo
B. Confidence Without Attitude
C. Students Always
D. Beyond Yourself

Question 2. What are your career goals, and how will the Berkeley MBA for Executives Program help you achieve them? Why is this the right time for you to undertake this program? (250—500 words)

Question 3. Please tell us about yourself and your background. You may include information about your family, where you grew up, your interests, or any other people or experiences that have influenced you. The goal of this essay is to get a sense of who you are, rather than what you have achieved professionally (1,000 word maximum).

Question 1 is almost the exact same question that is asked to full-time MBA applicants. These 4 Defining Principles are the core values of Berkeley-Haas, and your ability to answer these questions will help them determine how you will fit in with the Haas culture that they are trying to build. Question 2 essentially asks about how your short- and long-term goals fit in with your current experience and ambitions. Where do you want to go, and is that goal realistic? We have written many blogs about long-term goal essays and career transitions (see our other blogs), and Question 2 is the tried-and-true question asked of most MBA programs. Lastly, Question 3, the longest question, wants to know about who you are and what makes you unique. If you haven’t already in your prior 2 essays, this is really your chance to stand out and make them see why you are a unique fit and would be an irreplaceable asset in the Berkeley-Haas program.

Lastly, you are required to submit 2 letters of recommendation (one of which should ideally be from an immediate supervisor) and a letter of sponsorship. Although financial sponsorship is not required, your company is required to agree to minimize your travel time and ensure that you can come to class on all required days.

The last day to turn in applications for the incoming class for 2015 will be February 23rd.

Good luck with applications!
