Getting ready to apply to business school? If so, you may already have an idea of what you want to do for your career. Still need a place to start? Try looking into some of the fastest growing fields for business students.

With all the time and energy required to get a business degree, it’s important to make sure you have a passion and aptitude for your chosen career path. Some people acquire their hard-earned business degree only to spend years in a job they don’t even enjoy, not knowing all the options available to them.

Before making any big investment, you should know what you’re working with. So we put together a list of less conventional career paths in business to help you predict the best future for yourself after b-school:

Unconventional business career paths

There’s no shame in going off the beaten path. Finding your niche in business school is simply a reflection of your interests—not your abilities. According to QS, there are three alternative career paths MBA-holders should consider: 

  • Government jobs: Does the idea of working as a secret agent or spy on behalf of the country intrigue you? The treasury, commerce, and tax collection agencies specifically seek out MBA-holders, requiring impeccable networking and people skills.
  • Nonprofit jobs: Do you get more fulfillment out of meeting goals than you do making profits? Make your hard-earned business degree pay off in more ways than one for a cause you care deeply about.
  • Green jobs: Never in the history of our economy has there been a better time to work on behalf of business ethics and the environment. These jobs will help you sustain both the planet—and your career. 

Another popular alternative business venture is entrepreneurship. This has become increasingly popular for MBA holders (as well as others) over the past decade, as 17% of the North American population own businesses of their own.

Mix business with pleasure

Just because you’re going into business doesn’t mean you never use the right side of your brain. In fact, you have to be incredibly creative to come up with solutions, be able to negotiate, and fulfill emotional needs, all while getting tangible results.

Thinking broadly, here are three more creative career paths you can pursue with your business degree.

  • Media: Are you passionate about TV, film, online media, newspaper and magazine publishing, or events planning? Use your MBA to work alongside creatives in sales, PR, finance, accounting, operations, strategy, or management.   
  • Marketing and advertising: There is a high demand among marketers, advertising executives, and clients for business experts to help conduct research, manage relationships, and develop strategies. You also get to flex your creative muscles as you work alongside writers, designers, and web developers.
  • Human resources: This field is for the business person who has a knack for interpersonal skills as well as a savvy business sense. You must understand what makes both individual people and large corporations tick.   

Traveling a little further outside the box, consider these fields where you c an put your MBA to use in creative ways:

  • Writer: use your knowledge in business to help market your material as well as support yourself financially while you pursue your artistic endeavors.
  • Artist—particularly if you have an MBA in Art & Design, you can work work everywhere from more corporate environments to movie sets.
  • Fashion Designer—it takes a Master’s in business to know how to run one masterfully. Your team, brand, marketing, and network will be cutting-edge in more ways than one.
