Perelman donated $100 to Columbia Business School.

The gift will help fund new programs on the new CBS Manhattanville campus. One of the two buildings on the new campus will be named for Perelman – the Ronald O. Perelman Center for Business Innovation. The building will be lay opposite the Henry R. Kravis Building, a building named for a donor of the same $100 million amount in 2010.

Last year Perelman donated $25 million to UPenn to create the Center for Public Science and Economics, and another $20 to UPenn’s new Perelman Quadrangle.

In a Poets & Quants article on the donation, Glenn Hubbard, dean of CBS says: “The Perelman Center will allow Columbia Business School to continue pioneering breakthroughs in management education, such as moving beyond functional expertise or siloed learning and ensuring a more integrated curriculum for our students. It will help us create the classrooms of tomorrow and foster an even greater collaborative spirit among recruiters, students, alumni, and faculty members, paving the way for a stronger network and more meaningful outcomes for our community.”

For more info, you can check out the P&Q post, as well as a New York Times article, “Perelman Pledges $100 Million to Columbia Business School.”

To provide leadership for the new challenges and opportunities facing management education today, AACSB International (AACSB) has released a new set of accreditation standards for the world’s leading business schools.

Approved April 8th by its membership at the AACSB International Conference and Annual Meeting in Chicago, the standards will help business schools redefine the future of management education and meet the needs of business and society in the changing environment.

After two-plus years of study and collaboration with the global management education community, the focus is on defining new standards that:

• Drive innovation in business schools to create and sustain value for students, employers, and the communities they serve.

• Go beyond quality and ensure that business schools also have an impact through both scholarly education and the creation of new knowledge.

• Require significant engagement between faculty, students, and business professionals, fostering meaningful intersections to create and share knowledge that is both scholarly and relevant to practice.

Just as every organization and individual has been challenged in the past decade to reconsider how to create value in a rapidly changing global economy, so too have business schools faced questions about their approaches to educating future leaders.

“Business schools are at a time of unprecedented change. To remain current, leaders within the industry had to stand back and evaluate where management education needed to go,” says Joseph DiAngelo, chair of the AACSB Board of Directors and dean of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University.

“Throughout this process, we looked deeply at the marketplace to determine new routes to relevance, to ensure business schools are developing the type of leaders that society needs for the future. The changes will keep business schools at the heart of global commerce.”

Designed to give business schools the flexibility to innovate to meet the needs of the employer and student markets—while still holding institutions to the highest standards of quality—the new standards will provide a new benchmark for excellence.

“The new environment calls for schools to focus on their distinctive mission and value proposition. Students, employers, and society as a whole expect a great deal from business schools—especially when it comes to addressing the most challenging issues of the world,” says Richard E. Sorensen, chair of the BRC, and dean of the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech.

“In this context of constant change, the new accreditation standards will not only validate quality management education and impactful research, but also help business schools provide the leadership, skills, and knowledge necessary to the communities they serve,” Sorensen says.

Success Stories

e-gmat course has helped many acheive their dream score. Let us share a few success stories with you.

Vipul – VIPS0000 –

10 days to go- thanks to some really twisted questions posted without OAs by some members, my confidence was shaken and I looked for some more help in SC. Thanks to BB, I registered for SC course on e-gmat. Excellent course. If only I had a time machine and I could go back 2 months in time, I would have joined e-gmat SC course on day 1 of my preparation.

Pooja Jolie (GC: pjolie)

About e-gmat Verbal: At this time, I decided that I needed a prep course to boost my verbal. After considering Vertias, MGMAT and Kaplan, I decided on e-GMAT’s live course because of its focus on verbal. This course took my preparation to the next level.

SC course: The SC concepts that I learned through MGMAT were crystal clear after going through this course. Two other things helped me a lot on SC. Firstly the fact that the course is very heavy on application. There are these application files that don’t teach you anything but to apply what you have learned. Secondly, they have this OG solutions video course that is awesome. SC articles by Shraddha form egmat were really helpful too.

CR course: The CR course when combined with live sessions is really good too. It helped me weave through the logic of arguments and provided me an approach for most CR questions types. My accuracy just shot up. I would definitely recommend this course if you need help on verbal. This course played a major role in improving my verbal from 30 to 42.

Gurpreet Singh (GC: gurpreetsingh)

I joined E-gmat course and found it very useful. I saw improvement in verbal after e-gmat course. The live sessions of RAJAT on strategy and CR are awesome. Payal and Shraddha are no less than Stacy and Ron of MGMAT. No doubt no one knows more than these two experts of Mgmat, but sometimes I used to find their replies too technical to grasp. On the other hand – the lives sessions of Payal and Shraddha were awesome. Their articles and replies on the questions are fabulous. REALLY something that helps you to learn the concepts. I would highly recommend e-gmat for non natives, not only the course but also the replies and articles of its representatives.

Saurabh (GC:SOURH7WK)

I subscribed for e-gmat verbal live course and started once again my preparation for 4th attempt. After I subscribed to E-gmat course I realized my shortfalls in my verbal strategy. The course was very very helpful to bring up my V23 score to V40. And I would fully attribute my verbal success to e-gmat.

SC course: A ton of thanks to the ace teachers of e-gmat (Rajat, Payal & Shraddha) for putting up their efforts in this forum too. I got everything I needed to crack SC and RC (the RC strategy worked very well with me). Knowledge of sentence structure & attacking SC question by splitting the clauses was the key in improving on SC.

In conversational English, we may hear or use sentences in which we present reason for something by using the expression “due to”. While in certain cases, this usage may be grammatically correct.

But in certain other scenarios, it is incorrect. In this post, I will discuss these scenarios. Through this discussion, I will also explain the following question & answer:

Q: Can ‘due to’ and ‘because of’ be used interchangeably?
A: No. ‘due to’ is used to modify nouns only. ‘Because of’ is used to modify verbs. Thus, these two expressions cannot be used interchangeably.

What is “Due To” Used for?

RULE 1: The expression ‘due to’ can only be used to modify nouns. Thus, you cannot use this expression to present reason for an action in the clause. In sentence 1, use of ‘due to’ is incorrect because it is used to explain ‘why it is cold’. In other words, it is used to explain the reason behind the “verb” or “action” in the clause. This is not idiomatically correct. In sentence 2, use of ‘due to’ is correct because it is used to explain the reason behind ‘the cold wave’. In other words, it is used to explain the reason behind the “noun”. This is idiomatically correct.

RULE 2: ‘Due to’ is correct if the sentence makes sense when you replace ‘due to’ with ’caused by’. If, it does not, then use of ‘due to’ is not correct.
Here when ‘due to’ is replaced with ’caused by’, the sentence does not make sense. This check also proves that usage of ‘due to’ is incorrect. Here when ‘due to’ is replaced with ’caused by’, the sentence makes complete sense. This check proves that usage of ‘due to’ is correct.

What is “Because of” used for?

Rule 3: The expression ‘because of’ is used to modify entire clauses. Thus, you can use this expression to present reason for an action in the clause.

Sentence 1 above can be corrected by replacing ‘due to’ with ‘because of’. Now ‘because of’ modifies the clause presenting the reason why it is cold in Arizona.

What are correct and incorrect usages of ‘Due to’, ‘Caused by’,& ‘Because of”?

The parent-teacher meeting was canceled due to heavy rains. – INCORRECT
‘Due to’ modifies the action in the preceding clause and hence is not used correctly.

The parent-teacher meeting was canceled caused by heavy rains. – INCORRECT
Note how when “due to” is replaced with “caused by”, the sentence no longer makes sense.

The parent-teacher meeting was canceled because of heavy rains. – CORRECT
‘because of’ modifies the action in preceding clause, indicating why the meeting was canceled.

The cancellation of parent-teacher meeting was due to heavy rains. – CORRECT
‘Due to’ modifies the noun – cancellation.

The cancellation of parent-teacher meeting was caused by heavy rains.- CORRECT
Note how when “due to” is replaced with “caused by”, the sentence makes complete sense.

How does GMAT test this concept?

In OG12, Question 6 tests the usage of “due to”. In the original sentence, ‘due to’ used incorrectly. Since ‘due to’ is used to modify nouns, the sentence nonsensically implies that repair was due to the moisture.

What are the Key Take-Away Messages?

Use ‘due to’ only to modify nouns.

Usage of ‘due to’ is correct, if the sentence makes sense when ‘due to’ is replaced with ’caused by’.

Use ‘because of’ to modify verbs.

‘Due to’ & ‘because of’ are not interchangeable.

Official Sentences (Exercises)

Given this framework, let’s solve these official questions. But before we give the detailed solution from the standpoint of “due to”, “because of”, and “because”, we want you to take a stab at these. Give us your rationale for making your selection of the correct answer. Be sure to provide a detailed analysis at least for “due to” aspect of the question.

In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repairing due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing in the walls.

due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing

due to moisture that tourists had exhaled, thereby raising its humidity to such levels that salt from the stone would crystallize

because tourists were exhaling moisture, which had raised the humidity within then to levels such that salt from the stone would crystallize

because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them to levels so high as to make the salt from the stone crystallize

because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them to such levels that salt from the stone was crystallizing
