The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved the proposal, which also includes renovations to the existing College of Business Administration and Graduate School of Business buildings, both of which will be devoted to undergraduate education once the new building opens, according to an article in McCombs Today.

“In our current space, we can’t educate either graduate or undergraduate students the way we want to,” says Eric Hirst, McCombs associate dean, who adds that space constraints makes offering specialized electives a challenge. “Most importantly, we don’t have the ability to share fully the intellectual capital of the school.”

In many ways, the new building design will feel like a functional office environment, which allows space for teamwork and large-group meetings, as well as rooms for negotiations and client presentations.

The new building, which has not yet been designed, will incorporate state-of-the-art telecommunications capabilities to facilitate long-distance collaboration, perhaps even with Texas MBA students in the DFW, Houston, and Mexico City programs, McCombs Today reveals.

“We’ll be able to do the kind of things we need to do to run a modern, top-quality MBA program and remain competitive with other top programs for the best students,” Hirst says.

This is one of the largest gifts ever made to Columbia Business School, which plans to allocate $23.25 million to support the construction of the school’s new campus, with the remaining $1.75 million slated to bolster Columbia’s Social Enterprise Program.

The School’s Manhattanville Campus will reflect the fast-paced, high-tech, and highly social character of business in the 21st century. The facilities will create multifunctional spaces that foster a sense of community – spaces where students, faculty members, alumni, and external constituents can gather to exchange ideas.

This gift is the third major donation in support of the future Columbia Business School campus, which will be part of Columbia University’s expansion just north of its Morningside Campus.

The donor joins Henry R. Kravis ’69, co-founder, co-chairman, and co-CEO of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) and co-chair of the School’s Board of Overseers, who pledged $100 million for the project in October 2010, and Leon Cooperman ’67, chairman and CEO of Omega Advisors and also a member of the board, who donated $25 million to the new campus in April.
