Does might function as a start of a conditional phrase like if?
This is part of a sentence taken from a question

, a microbe never before seen on Earth that might escape from the laboratory and kill vast numbers of humans who would have no natural defense against it.

You use would because you use might earlier, right?

This is about subjunctive mood - real vs. unreal codnitions. These things are complicated and it is better to review. One good book that you should be able to get your hands on is TOELF, CLIFF's 1994 edition, reprint of 1976. It is the best I saw so far.

Back to your question, would is used because in unreal condition, will cannot be used; might is used for the same reason. [though may is often used in spoken english].

it is all Subjunctive mood stuff. here is an example to scare you :lol:
Had he known his destiny, he would have had more time to think about his present.
