1. At the time of the Mexican agrarian revolution, the most radical faction, that of Zapata and his followers, proposed a return to communal ownership of land, to what had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards.

(A) land, to what had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards
(B) land, a form of ownership of the pre-Columbians and respected by the Spaniards
(C) land, repected by the Spaniards and a pre-Columbian form of ownership
(D) land in which a pre-Columbian form of ownership was repected by the Spaniards
(E) land that had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards

The answer is A. Can someone tell me why other choices are wrong?

2. According to United States Air Force officials, a cannon shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate what kind of damage can result when jets fly into a flock of large birds.

(A) shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful to demonstrate
(B) shooting dead chickens at airplanes has proved itself helpful as a demonstration of
(C) shooting dead chickens at airplanes proves itself helpful as demonstrating
(D) that shoots dead chickens at airplanes proves itself helpful to demonstrate
(E) that shoots dead chickens at airplanes has proved helpful in demonstrating

The answer is E. My question is: can I cross out A, B, and C for the reason that they begin with "shooting" rather than "that shoots"? Why or Why Not?

Thanks :)

for (2)...I don't know about the beginning of the sentance, but at the end, you need "has proved" and you also need "in demonstrating", pointing to E

"That" is a relative clause that tells you more about the Canon.

"A canon shooting dead chickens at airplanes "..somehow suggests that the dead chickens are on the airplane and the canon is shooting at them..

A machine shooting balls at the hitter was found to be a great way to practise.

A machine that shoots balls at the hitter ...

you see the difference

I would request people to not post answers right away in the first post as it defeats the purpose of trying to solve the questions.

If one wants to post the answers right away then please hide it with Spoiler. All these show/hide features are readily available on the forum.

Q 1
(E) land that had been a pre-Columbian form of ownership respected by the Spaniards

E : ambiguous "that". that cannot refer to "land". But it can refer to any noun - revolution, faction, Zapta, return, ownership etc
