(1) In addition to her work in music, Mary contributed to the society by teaching children English.

(2) In addition to her work in music, Mary's contribution to the society included teaching children English.

(1) or (2) is correct?

I am confused whether the modifier "In addition to her work in music" modifies "Mary" or Mary's contribution".

1) In addition to her work in music, Mary contributed to the society by teaching children English.

(2) In addition to her work in music, Mary's contribution to the society included teaching children English.

(1) or (2) is correct?

modifier modifies her work not herself. In addition there is a possessive usage as shown below.
in addition to her work in music - block indicates possessive - so Mary's contribution.

I agree that 2 is correct. because her-possesive pronoun and Mary's - is also possesive
But, I do not see any problem with 1 either. anybody willing to claim 1 wrong ?

Replace "her" with Mary and you will know the problem:

" In addition to her work in music, Mary contributed to the society by teaching children English."

In addition to Mary work in music... vs In addition to Mary's work in music

The confusion is because "Her" is object pronoun as well as Possesive pronoun...whereas for "he" its a diff case: "Him" is object pronoun and "his" is possesive pronoun.

Tks all

(2) is right since her work in music modifier has work which is equivalent to Mary's contribution

i think 1 is right. 2 is definitely wrong.
"In addition to her work in music, Mary's contribution ...." makes Mary's contribution the subject. (in my mind it would make MAry's contribution a person who worked in music)

If I re-write the two sentences as below, (1) looks absurd to me.

(1) In addition to Mary's work in music, she contributed to the society by teaching children English.

(2) In addition to Mary's work in music, her contribution to the society included teaching children English.
