1. E. Has the right singular verb 'has'. 'that' is important and is in E.
2. B would be my choice. D is close - but 'also' before 'an inland' is unnecessary.

Sorry. C and E were the shortlist. I did not notice Judgements as it was preceded by 'the' and the singular 'art historian'. Stand corrected. C would be my choice.

Please underline the portion to be modified and keep the threads to 1 post per thread. Thank you.
C and B should be it
1- It is characteristic of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as it is [characteristic] of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as have the judgments of the art historian.

Notice the portion in red is a parenthetical element which you can remove without affecting the understanding of the sentence. However, to keep the parallelism, you need "it is" with "characteristic" being ellipsed. A and B are out. Next, "has" should be right as it should have been conjugated with "the taste", third person singular. D is out. E requires a conjunction to link the 2 independent clause otherwise, as it is, it creates a run-on sentence.
