A.) generated through wind power now than it was B). generated through wind power now as it was C). generated through wind power now as was the case D). now generated through wind power as it was E). now generated through wind power than was the case. D "as much....as" is the correct usage. _________________ Trying hard to conquer Quant. "as was the case" seems like a better comparison. 1:46 (both) Last edited by GMATT73 on 14 Aug 2006, 18:07, edited 1 time in total. I'll try to explain the first one in my own words. A). million, which is part of a deal that will make Incorrect because is has no referent to it, we are unsure of what "is" corresponds to. B). million, a part of a deal that makes Incorrect because the original sentence is in the future as stated by this statement, will purchase the color-printing divison, Choice B is in the present tense, ...that makes, so it is incorrect C). million, part of a deal making Same problem as found in B, it is in present tense, needs to be in the future tense. D). million as a part of a deal to make Same problem as found in B, it is in present tense, needs to be in the future tense. E). million as part of a deal that will make Correct, since tenses agree For the second question, I elimated choices A, B, C immediately because we are comparing time periods, now to then..The stress needs to be on the "now" in this paragraph. So, left with D, and E, E is just ackward and long. So, chose D. VP Joined: 14 May 2006 Posts: 1415 Followers: 5 Kudos [?]: 174 [0], given: 0 Show Tags 14 Aug 2006, 07:40 to add to chaos here I am picking 1 D 2 B 1). The computer company has announced that it will purchase the color-printing divison of a rival company for$ 950 million, which is part of a deal that will make it the largest manufacturer in the office color-printing market.

A). million isn't a deal itself... wrong modifier "which"

B). wrong modifier IMO

C). gerund "making" plays the verb, not correct

D). million as a part of a deal to make
I think this makes sense, the objective of this part of a deal is to make it the largest manuf.... I am not puzzled here whether it is the deal or the part of it... here I clearly see that part of the deal is responsible.

E). part of a deal or the deal itself?

2). There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels: more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990.

note* we need 2nd AS for ||sm

A.) not parallel

B). generated through wind power now as it was

C). energy vs. the case... is this parallel?

D). now generated through wind power as it was

E). not parallel

now the real problem is b/w B and D... they are exactly the same except for the placement of "NOW"

If the look into original sentence NOW is placed closer to the end of the sentence, after POWER... ONE REASON TO PICK B

Another reason to pick B because of NOW is parallelism... it is comparing NOW vs. 1990s

can't wait to see if my logic is correct

I initially got E and D...

However looking at OA for second one it seems D is preferred as it avoids usage of 'it'.

good questions.

There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels: more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now as was the case in 1990.

I chose (C) for the second one because:

1. correct as...as... comparison
2. is generated (active) balances with was the case (active/ellipsis)

Hope this helps.

Now, U2 lover can you please explain the first SC for me???

C. ABD are ruled out because of "it", which has no clear antecedent/referent. E is also ruled out because of "than". now remains C, which has correct idiom "as x as y".

Professor, how does (C) change the meaning we use participal phrase for an event/action that is already happened or is happening at the present but here the deal that we are talking is going to happen in the future only and we are not certain about it. so it changes meaning.
