I chose E.

its is a matter of parallelism because the underlined part should be ll to "the first book by a Black woman". Only D and E are ll but D is run-on.
So E is correct one.

C,D -> 'the second one only published/that' is not a correct idiom
A,B -> 'it' is not nescessary

E is concise and clear.

Hi LM,
The explanation goes as follows :

It is unclear whom "it" refers to hence due to pronoun reference error, A and B are out.

C and D are not parallel as pointed by Himalayan. Moreover, they are awkward. It means that 1st book was by a black woman and 2nd by American woman.

E is precise, and parellel.

Hope this helps.

(A) and (B) out because of it (refers to?).

(C) and (D) don't continue the sequence 'the first book by a black woman and the second of a woman', because the author is both black and a woman. I agree with you, thus (E). cheers!

A collection of 38 poems by Phillis Wheatley, a slave, was published in the 1770’s, the first book by a Black woman and it
was only the second published by an American woman.

(A) it was only the second published by an American woman

(B) it was only the second that an American woman published

(C) the second one only published by an American woman

(D) the second one only that an American woman published

(E) only the second published by an American woman

Best Answer is E. Parallelism

First book by a black woman and only the second published by an American Woman.
