1996 amount x was invested, By 1997 the amount increased by r%. By 1998 the total amount of 1997 increased by y%. What is the percentage of increase from with respect to x at the end of 1998.

Percentage increase: (ry/100 + r + y) %

After 1st year: Total amount is (1 + r/100) * x
After 2nd year: Total amont is (1 + r/100) * x * (1 + y/100)

= x * ( 1 + ry/10000 + r/100 + y/100)
= x ( 1 + ( (ry/100) + r + y) / 100)

% increase is = ( ( (ry/100) + r + y) * x / x ) * 100
= (ry/100 + r + y) %

1996 - x
1997 - rx/100 + x
1998 - y/100(rx/100+x) + rx/100 + x = rxy/10000 + xy/100 + rx/100 + x

Difference between 1998 and 1996 = rxy/10000 + xy/100 + rx/100 + x - x = rxy/10000 + xy/100 + rx/100

% increase = x/100(ry/100 + y + r) / x * 100% =( ry/100 + y + r )%

Wouldn't this be a candidate for the "pick numbers" strategy and then backsolve? Just curious....

Anyways.... on this one without the 5 options... we have no choice but to formulate the equations (got the eqn using ywilfreds approach)
