2^x or (2^x)^y

Well, I believe the equation to be of the kind of 2^x where x = (4-1)^2. Otherwise, I think that the equation would be written like this : ([2^(4-1)]^2)/2

(2^(4-1)^2)/2
= (2^9)/2
= 2^8

Fig - would you mind reviewing this rule. Wouldn't something like 2^3^2 = 2^6? How do you know when do this instead of the original question?
