I'd take a Jos A. Bank or a Brooks Brothers from the outlet over those any day. If you hunt around, you can find some great deals on suits that have higher sticker prices.

If I absolutely had to choose a suit from that list on Macy's, I would take the Ralph Lauren. If they carry a blue label Ralph Lauren - those are actually good suits (I think some of them are made by Corneliani?).

thanks for your suggestions but what I am wondering, what makes a suit a good suit besides its name?

Obviously 100% wool is a prerequisite, but other than that? What things should I be looking for?

I'm a novice at this myself but perhaps the thread count? The quality of the wool?
My "Super Fine 120s" suit from Macy's didn't prove very durable at all.

Guys, Hermes ties and shoes (they acquired John Lobb) do go on sale once a year in NY for the sample sale- the prices are typically 50% off and they have quite a few classic designs.

And also please stay away from the critter ties for interviews, etc. You're not a banker....yet.

You mean the little penguins and other 'critters' they put on ties? Why can't we wear those now?

They're generally a staple of the Managing Director wardrobe. They look a little bit too "flashy" for junior level people.

There's an old banking urban legend: analyst walks into an MD's office wearing a Hermes tie. MD says "come over here," takes out a scissor from his desk drawer and proceeds to cut the tie in half while it's still around the neck of the analyst. MD takes out a $100 bill from his wallet and says, "now go buy 5 analyst ties."

Save the critter print ties for when you make VP, or for cocktail parties/after work events.

Ok, quick question. If critters are out, which tie should I get for Christmas?

1

2

3

4

Also any other suggestions would be great. This is going with a navy blue suit, white shirt combo.

Any of these are excellent choices. I like the red and yellow ones.

Honestly, they all look the same to me, man. Anything will go with a blue suit and a white shirt. You really can't go wrong. $170 for a tie, though...man.

It's a gift from my girlfriend. Something she can't really screw up like she did last year, total disaster that I'm not getting in to. Let's just say things caught on fire.

Yes, I think the "pandas dancing" ties are a little too flashy...if you have impeccable style and are the son of some European tycoon that wears ascots paired with cashmere jackets daily it would work, but otherwise go with understatement...you can still go for quality though :) Terp's MD story is right on.

I like ties #1 and #3, they are classic Hermes and will look fab with a navy suit. Somewhere that would have very similar designs would be Ferragamo...both classic.

If you want a more "young" tie design I would try Charvet although I think they're overpriced.
