Friends, this is a very old post. Guys with only 177 posts and that too someone who registered in 2003 would probably not be around.

You could solve it in the following manner:

The signs of the modulus would change in the following ranges:

z < -2, -2 <= z < 0, 0 <= z < 1, z >= 1

Solve for z in these ranges.
For z >= 1, you would get z = 3.
For 0 <= z < 1, you would get z = 3
For - 2 < z < 0, you would get z = - 1/5
For z < -2, you would get z - 1 (which is absurd if z < -2)

So the answer is z = - 1/5 and z = 3
