I was stuck between A and E myself. I chose A because it appeared to be more concise. Is similar the wrong usage?

Can you please explain why A is flawed?
Thanx

тАШAтАЩ is flawed because it does not retain parallelism. Notice how it says, тАЬit continues for some time to respireтАЭ, taking in oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide, just as human beings do..... In this case, тАШdoтАЩ stands for respire, which makes this choice parallel.

If you were to use тАШsimilar to the way human beings breatheтАЩ, this parallelism is no longer followed. Not the clearest explanation, but hope it helps.
