4 Months Before Round 1 – A Key Way to Improve Your Chances [#permalink]

From Dr. Shel Watts, http://www.mbaadmit.comSpecial Pricing through June 2, 2011: 50% Off Regular Pricing...HURRY, offer ends soon! MBA Admit.com: Proudly, one of the most affordable top-quality MBA admissions consulting companies On the Role of Extracurricular ActivitiesDear MBA Candidates, This time of the year, I get many inquiries from candidates asking whether it is too soon to enroll in MBA admissions consulting services for Round 1 or Round 2. My response: Not at all! I definitely prefer to work with candidates sooner rather than later for several reasons, and dominant among those reasons is the impact this can have on a candidate’s extracurricular activities. Some candidates are not aware of how much they can use extracurricular activities to enhance their MBA candidacy. Extracurricular activities can allow you to distinguish yourself greatly from other candidates with similar profiles. Those activities can be key in demonstrating your leadership qualities, abilities and commitment to community. Extracurricular activities can also persuade the admissions committee that you will be a great choice for their MBA class, since those activities can help you assert that you will contribute excellently to out-of-class activities once you are in business school, thereby enriching the MBA experience for your peers. When I complete a strategy session with a candidate with four months to go before the deadline, I am able to offer a much broader range of action steps that they can implement to enhance their extracurricular profile. When I begin working with candidates much later – in August or September, for instance – the range of steps the candidate can take to strengthen their extracurricular activities is usually fewer in number, simply because there is much less time to implement the advice received. So with four months left before Round 1 deadlines, what is a way you can improve the attractiveness of your candidacy? Get a good assessment about the strengths and distinctiveness of your extracurricular activities and determine high impact ways to strengthen your record in the months you have before the deadline. Then implement! There are many quality things you can do with this much time before the deadlines, so make sure to maximize this valuable time before you must press the “Send” button for your MBA applications. An outstanding set of extracurricular activities can, in many cases, provide that extra something needed to tip the scales in favor of admission! Shelly - A few questions - 1)Can you give us an example of the kind of extra-curricular activities that applicants can take up 4 months before Round 1? 2)Would this not seem suspect to the admission committee?
Thank You!

From Dr. Shel Watts, http://www.mbaadmit.comSpecial Pricing through June 2, 2011: 50% Off Regular PricingMBA Admit.com: Proudly, one of the most affordable top-quality MBA admissions consulting companies Hi ra011y, There are definitely ways to add new activities or, alternatively, enhance your existing activities in ways that add notable value to your candidacy but do not appear suspect to admissions officers. Enhancing existing activities is often easier to do when you have less time available before the deadlines. But adding new activities is also effective when done well. Besides noting this, I would not want to give generic advice about extracurricular activities, because the sorts of activities that will most add value to your candidacy must make sense in the context of your background, story, academic experiences and professional record. When you think about this, you will need to look in the context of your past record of activities and current interests to identify the types of activities on which to focus. When appropriate, carry the assessment even further, trying to focus greater time not on activities that might seem generic or stereotypical for candidates of your background, but on activities that will distinguish you from the pack. When I advise candidates about which extracurricular activities to add or augment, the advice is highly tailored to the candidate, their interests (past and present), their future goals and any weaknesses they may have in their candidacy overall.
