Hi!

I think that answers should be
1.C
2.C
3.A
4.A

1. There is "having" in D so I'll cross it out. (Seriously, "having" indicates that action is completed - that is not true in our case). In E - I don't like "arming themselves".
C is better than A or B because I don't think that we should use "and they we armed only" - independent clause to convey clearly subordinate sentence.
I vote for C.

2. I think that in this case we should use "a higher number" because it is A number ( such as 1,5 per capita and so on). So B and D are out!
E is "O My God!" - leave it.
In A - than ANY large city - which means including Los Angeles - OUT
I think it is C.

3. "Which" should be as close as possible to modifed object. In this case it is "Integration" -> so we have only A and E to choose from.
in E - "significantly" used improperly.
I think it should be A.

4. C,D,E are wordy and awkward.
We have A and B to choose from.
I think that we should use Past Simple because the action is completed.
Past Simple + during - is OK!
I think it should be A.

PS I sought these questions somewhere. Are they from GMAT+?

1) Traveling the back roads of Hungary, in 1905 B├йla Bart├│k and Zolt├бn Kod├бly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, and they were armed only with an Edison phonograph and insatiable curiosity.

(C) In 1905 Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly began their pioneering work in ethnomusicology, traveling the back roads of Hungary armed only

C is the answer... really dont know how to explain this.

2)Los Angeles has a higher number of family dwellings per capita than any large city.

this one...well, compare two similar things...apples to apples (sic)

(A) a higher number of family dwellings per capita than any large city
dwellings to city comparison
(B)higher numbers of family dwellings per capita than any other large city
dwellings to any other large city...
(C) a higher number of family dwellings per capita than does any other large city
Dwellings to er...Dwellings...
...Answer
(D) higher numbers of family dwellings per capita than do other large cities
"do" is incorrect usage... do for plural subjects
(E) a high per capita number of family dwellings, more than does any other large city

wrong usage...more than that of...is corrrect

3) School integration plans that involve busing between suburban and central-city areas have contributed, according to a recent study, to significant increases in housing integration, which, in turn, reduces any future need for busing.
(A) significant increases in housing integration, which, in turn, reduces
(B) significant integration increases in housing, which, in turn, reduces
(C) increase housing integration significantly, which, in turn, reduces
(D) increase housing integration significantly, in turn reducing
(E) significantly increase housing integration, which, in turn, reduce

i would say A..

school integration plans....have contributed to....significant increases in housing

4) Even though its per capita food supply hardly increased during two decades, stringent rationing and planned distribution have allowed the PeopleтАЩs Republic of China to ensure nutritional levels of 2,000 calories per person per day for its population.

(A) Even though its per capita food supply hardly increased during

Use of "during" in this context is incorrect.

during + definite period ....
during the period between 80's and 90's..is correct

(B) Even though its per capita food supply has hardly increased in

B is correct...

(C) Despite its per capita food supply hardly increasing over

Despite + Noun

(D) Despite there being hardly any increase in its per capita food supply during

The dreaded "Being" and incorrect use of "During"

(E) Although there is hardly any increase in per capita food supply for

wrong tense "is"
