A it is. E sounds like the Earth sends things up...
B, C and D not parallel verb tense

global pall of dust that blots, alters the climate, and changes......

A is the most parallel and best answer.

DE also change the meaning.

close call b/w E and D for me... will go with D

'sends'/ 'blotting' parallel to 'changes' / 'killing'

what's the OA please?

Only A and E maintain the parallel structrure : blots...,alters... and changes...
But as Paul said "which=earth" in E. So the sentence would mean that

Earth sends up a global pall of dust,
Earth blots the sun,
Earth alters the climate, and
Earth changes the course of evolution by
killing off many plant and animal species

I think it would be more logical if the global pall of dust caused these effects. (as suggested in A)

So I will go for A

With E, I did not see //ism issue but I did only half the job.As Paul mentioned, E implies Earth sending the stuff which is wrong. Good discussion.

Scientists have suggested that once every 10 million years or so a truly colossal object from space cuts through the atmosphere and slams into Earth, sending up a global pall of dust that blots out the Sun,
alters the climate, and
changes the course of evolution by killing off many plant and animal species.

participial phrase modifying the noun in the independent clause.

A

It is tempting to thinking that "sending isn't parallel." However, blots is what needs to be parallel w/ alters, & "changes" not sending. So A is correct.

I'd go with A too.

E changes the meaning of the sentence. It is the dust that results in blotting out the sun, altering climate bla bla bla. But with E, it makes it sound like the dust is one of the effect just like climate change bla bla bla.
