4cm cube is cut into 1 cm cubes. what is the surface area of the new cubes combined?

sa of cube = 6a^2
so 6*1*1 times 8 - (won't a 4cm sided cube yield 8 - 1cm sided cubes?) therefore 6*8 = 48

solution = 1*1*6*4*4*4
why?

4cm cube is 4*4*4 so will yield 4^3 or 64 * (1cm)cubes

Each 1cm cube has 6 faces with an area of 1cm^2 so has a total area of 6cm^2.

64*6cm^2 = 384cm^2

# of cubes = 4*4*4 = 64

Each cube has a surface area of 6. So In all, the area is 64*6 = 384
