First, one should avoid giving out the answer with the question. Takes the fun out of solving the question.

I am also confused why A, and not C, is the right answer.

I have had problems with such questions. SCs that have a small part of the sentence to be corrected. Is there any document that has a good number of such problems with solutions?

A is correct

Like Byron ..., Jack London is correct, The element before comma should directly modify what comes after comma.

In C, Just as Byron died doesn't modify Jack London.
