500 GMAT score [#permalink] New post 10 Sep 2012, 07:57
Q-35 and V-23

I had no idea how it went terribly wrong. I need help with GMAT.
Things I did:
1) All MGMAT books and worked all questions
2) All OG 12 and 13th edition questions- read through all explanations and was thorough with the materials

But just a week before my actual test I took GMATprep and was shell shocked to find a 550. That literally put off my mind. That's when it actually hit me that the quant questions I have been working on were only the basics. But by then, it was too late to even reschedule my exam. I gave the test and got 500 :(.

Now i'm looking for something which would push my quants and verbal by 10 -12 points. Help me. I'll re-take my exam in 2 months. I need this. I'm hard working and I'm ready for the pressure.

Hi Buddy : Though obvious as we are very much blood n flesh but still a request, Don't feel bad. It's just that the chips are down now but trust me the way u have started buoying up ur own spirit and thinking of taking a head on, the day is very near when u will recraft ur own gmat story..... and guess there's an unanimity that we all like to read debriefs of 500 to 700 journey than 700 in 1st attempt ( nowhere I wanna undermine the 1st timers or their stupendous achievements ---- but dark horses / underdogs have a special aroma with which they suffuse the room ).

Do u know that u already have an edge ? No adulations, the reason being u are aware, u have actually zoned on the fact/reason that has pulled down ur scores -----the first n foremost thing needed to face the battle for the 2nd time.

U have shared what u have covered but what is more important is how much u have internalised ? Q35 suggests u are quite ok with the basics but what about the application part and that too within the tight timelines of 2 mins.

My humble suggestion will be to find out the areas that u are comfortable with n the ones that's giving u bumps. Start with ur strengths n mould urself through practise/review so that ur accuracy hovers bxn 95-100% : Just get hooked to PS n DS directory of Gmatclub n subscribe to the daily feeds of BUNUEL ( he is a philanthrope / he is magical / he is a Legend ), do all his Signature items, make every effort that the concept sinks in.

Now the trade off : On the 1st go some sections might give u jitters, revisit/analyse and then take a call ---- if even on the 2nd go u feel the same, DUMP those for eg Probality/ PnC, Geometry :

The 2 areas that i have to be comfortable with ( no choices here ) are NUMBER PROPERTIES / INEQUALITIES 60-70% of Gmat Qrevolvesaround these 2 : The way out is building one's concept through gmatclub math book, practising those concepts over 600-700 level Q's from PS/DS directory, shifting gears n practising these topics from bunuel's signature.

The crux is I can afford to make some educated guess on my weak areas n move on BUT I CANNOT AFFORD TO ACT AS A NAIVE WRT SITTERS OR ON MY STRENGTHS , if i do so the reciprocation will be real choppy. Even 10-12 wrongs can land u in that elusive zone of 48-49, guess another 5-6 can be a safe approximation for Q 44-45- ur desired level, provided u don't get things on a row.

For Verbal : I can only say ( take it with a pinch of salt, my thought )....... The more u practise n review, the more u learn --- ur eyes/brain suddenly start picking up the pattern. Learning grammar n its rule definitely helps but plz don't get obsessed with it as we are here to crack an exam that tests us on certain definitive rules / styles/ patterns and not to be linguistic/ grammar experts . Stick to OG/ver review/ Gprep documents / Gprep Question bank 1 ------------Do redo, keep an error log, search in forums, follow Ron Purewal aka lunarpower, start with mini tests in blocks of 40, improve and then move to full length cat's, takd them multiple times till u have exhausted both urself n the software

Cheer up buddy and participate moren more in forums, u will find so many mates to be in the same boat and all eager to help --------- Trust me, the pensive mood will soon disappear in thin air.
