510 -> 470 after 6 mnth preparation, Down but not Out.

510 -> 470 after 6 mnth preparation, Down but not Out. [#permalink] New post   22 Jun 2013, 14:58
Hi Guys,

This is my first post on GMAT club :) . I am totally devastated after my 2nd attempt today :shock: .
After 6 months of preparation my score gone down form 510(Q46, V17) to 470 (Q45,V12) :? . I didn't expect this much low, expecting at least around 600. I can't figure out what went wrong from my side. I am planning to join either classroom coaching or online interactive coaching who can guide me better than me. But not sure which one will suite me.

Few of my scores
GMAT Prep 1 -> Nov-10 -> 560 (Q47, V21)
GMAT Prep 2 -> Dec-20 -> 560 (Q48, V20)
GMAT TEST -> Dec-31 -> 510 (Q46, V17)

Re-install GMAT Prep
GMAT Prep 2 -> May-5 -> 580 (Q47, V23)
GMAT Prep 1 -> Jun-17 -> 360 (Q06, V28) (Only Attempted Verbal)
MGMAT CAT-1 -> Jun-20 -> 560 (Q41, V27) (Put more concentration on Verbal)
GMAT TEST -> Jun-23 -> 470 (Q45, V12) :shock:

After this dismal performance I was planning to drop my GMAT dream.
But how can I quit ???????? I have to overcome my fear.
Again I am pulling my socks and tightening my buckle against my upcoming GMAT.
This time I need help from all the experts and their advise.

I was preparing below materials for 6 months, hardly I practice Quant in last 6 months apart from few qsn practice, still I could not improve my verbal score.
SC -> MGMAT series
RC -> MGMAT series
CR -> Powerscore CR Bible
Quant -> MGMAT series
for Questions practice, OG V13 (practiced 2/3 times each qns), and OG Verbal V2
GMAT Club resources / Tools (Error logs)

Please suggest, I will really appreciate if you guys suggest what is good form me. Also Sorry for making this post big and boring.

If your score actually went down after preparing for 6 months, you should look for help externally. Every person is different and every person has different mental blocks. Your preparation methodology might be flawed. You need to sit with someone who can guide you on the best way to prepare. Get in touch with a private tutor or a friend/relative who has excelled in GMAT to get proper guidance.

Sorry about your disappointment. Your written English is very good, so I'm confident you can bring up your verbal score. You can try posting here and see if other GMAT Club members area in your area. That way you can form a private study group.

Between interactive online coaching or a classroom prep course, I'd choose the classroom prep course. Having interactions with other students can be invaluable when the way the instructor presents a topic just doesn't make sense. Another student might be able to give you another perspective that will make sense.

There are lots of options for you depending on where you are located. You can consider a classroom program (conducted in many cities across the world), an online course (doesn't matter where you are located), private tutoring (available online and in person).

How is your timing? Are you able to finish the verbal section in time, or are you left guessing at the end?

In any case, given the wide discrepancy between your scores, you'd probably do best with private tutoring. (As Karishma says, this can be done online.) That way you can focus precisely on what's giving you trouble in verbal. A regular class would cover a lot of math you've already mastered, and it still might not address your verbal needs.
