I donn think THAT vs ING usage being checked here. 'that is' is implicit in 'a cannon shooting'
'helpful in demonstrating' is correct idiomatic usage

is 'demonstrating' a gerund here? which is a verb acting as a noun?

Im facing this difficulty !! Please underline the Q. We have been here long enough to understand that asking a Q in the wrong way does not help any one. Every one's time is precious. Lets do it the right way. Cannon shooting dead chickens sounds as if cannon do shoot dead chickens normally Cannons that shoot dead chickens sounds as cannons that are made to shoot dead chickens.

IMO E. Here is my guess abt the question on ing and that, underlined part is talking about cannon (noun) and not about shooting (verb), therefore it should be 'cannon that' instead of 'cannon shooting' I think this will help, not sure

Cannons that shoot dead chickens sounds as cannons that are made to shoot dead chickens. icandy, and what is your explanation of "to demonstrate" vs "in demonstrating"?

I don't think the focus is "to demonstrate" vs "in demonstrating" D) is present tense E) is present perfect Based on the context, the present perfect makes more sense here. The shooting of chickens does not proves itself helpful. It has proved helpful.
