This is what I T.H.I.N.K. ( and I wish I was good at it.)

Independent of = Seperate from
Independent from = Shoot off

Since the sentence originally meant " rather than a shoot off of a common......", it leaves us with option A, B and D

"Instead of" is a preposition and should be used as Prep + Noun.

So I will refrain from using Instead of. Thus eliminating D.

Using Parallelism, I chose B

D is out for ||ism.

Analyzing the meaning of the sentence, the fossil is developed from an ancestor of mammals, not that the development is independent of the ancestor of mammals.

That leaves us with B as the best answer choice.

A) violates parallelism
Mammals .. are a branch of .. rather than developing independently from a common ancestor of mammals ..
