560 on the GMAT!Lower than even my practice scores! [#permalink] New post 01 Oct 2010, 23:47
Hello people,
Just took my GMAT yesterday.I decided to do so after the following scores on practice CATs:
Gmatprep1: 380 (without any practice, to check where i stand)
MGMAT 1 : 600
MGMAT 2 : 580
MGMAT 3 : 630
MGMAT 4 : 640
MGMAT 5 : 670
Gmatprep 2 : 640
GMAT : 560 (42Q/26V)

I was confident about my quant as i would get 45 on an average. i got an average of 32-33 on the verbal, which was my weak point. But i still thought I knew the matter.Come test day, I was calm. The AWA went decently with a minute to minute-and-a-half of rereading my essays. The quant was not tough and verbal also wasnt tough. But i took up a lot o time onboth the sections and eventually was forced to guess 3-5 questions on each section. The high number of guesses had shaken my confidence up and eventually i though ill cancel my score. I was so disappointed. But I still opted to get my score.I honestly was expecting around 460-480. I got a 560.After aiming for a 700+ and being beaten over by poor timing, I realised that I had to work on my timing.

Im going to retake the test in a month from now.I feel I know the study material decently.Ill surely work more on it.But the most important thing i feel i should work on is timing myself.Although I timed my practice every time, I still managed to mess up my timing on d-day !

Any suggestions?comments?
Realy need all the help i can get.

rb90 I believe it was just a bad day for you. Can you please tell which books and material you used for the preparation?

Try gmatclub tests for quant. and for verbal section used Manhattan SC guide.

I think guessing last 5 questions has the potential to reduce the score by 50 points. When you analyze GMAT prep this could become clear.

Both speed and accuracy are needed to increase your score. What are the study materials did you use ? Did you spend enough time reviewing your tests ?

This would surely help. For CR, powerscore bible is excellent. Don't leave out RC if that is your weak link. Good luck with your prep.

My study material was :
The OG11
The OG verbal and quant reviews
CR: powerscore bible
SC: MGMAT
RC: MGMAT
I also went through the MGMAT geometry and number properties book, only to look for shortcuts and tricks.I somehow felt that the MGMAT RC book was helpful but not enough. Its strategy is decent but i felt something was going wrong.

And I thouroughly reviewed all my tests, including reviews of correct questions.

And strange enough, I dont even think i was nervous while taking the exam. When i got a 640 in my Gmatprep , i was expecting around 720+ . While reviewing, I saw that 80% questions i could answer even without looking at the answers.I thought i was rushing through the problems. So i thought ill take it a tad slower and cautiously. I think this caused me to run out of time on my GMAT.
What do you think?

For quant you need to do more questions and identifying your weaknesses and work on those. I have completed all mgmat books except two advanced chapters in VIC book and Probability section in word translations book. I started with foundations book and worked through all of them.

I have identified the following as my weaknesses
1. Careless mistakes on easy problems either due to not looking at what is being asked or simple quant errrors.
2. Word problems - I don't have the confidence to solve when I see one.
3. Permutation, Combination and Probability - most of the mgmat questions are from this so i am not able to improve my score. I haven't spend time preparing for this topic yet.

For verbal
1. CR - after powerscore bible I feel confident about solving all the CR questions under timed condition. I am seeing improvements while doing questions
2. SC - started going to some of the notes from other test takers as I don't feel like reading that big mgmat book again
3. RC - just started working on this section by using mgmat guide
If you can take some practice questions and identifying your weaknesses and work on your weaknesses, you will surely improve your score.

All the best.
