580 GMAT Please Evaluate [#permalink] New post 18 Sep 2011, 17:46
Hi,
My profile is as follows:

Age: 24
Sex: Female
Ethnicity:Indian
Nationality: Australian
Work Experience: 2 yrs, 3 yrs by the time I start the MBA
Industry: Spatial Sciences
GMAT: 580
GPA: 3.6

I belong to a small industry of the Sptial Sciences. It is extremely specialized and I want to start my MBA as soon as possible. I took the GMAT 2 weeks ago and didnt score too well. I believe my score was not a tru reflection of my ability so I am retaking it in 6 weeks. However, I would like to know which universities could I apply to with my current score and profile.

Previously I was looking at the top B schools in Europe: LBS, INSEAD, IESE, IE B School
Hong Kong UST, ISB (India), MBS (Australia) and AGSM (Australia).

Could anyone please advise me as to which B schools in Europe and Asia I could apply for?

Thanks
Aanchal

Hello aanchalsinha, thanks for your question.

Your 580 is not an insurmountable challenge, but it is definitely a challenge. My general philosophy is that your quants (e.g., test scores, GPA) open the door, but your experience and essays get you admitted. You would just have to make sure your essays really differentiate you.

In terms of general level-setting, check the mean or median GMAT scores of all the schools you’re interested in. The closer you are to the mean, the better. I usually say if your score is within the middle 80% range, you have a shot. If your score is lower than that, it’s not impossible but you’re facing an uphill battle.

Best of luck,
Brian

Please help me with some advice based on my information here.
Took the gmat 3 days ago and scored 530
GPA 3.2
Nationality: Cameroonian
Work experience: 3 years in a very challenging environment in Cameroon. Really didnt expect my score to be this low and this doesnt reflect me. besides, my boss didn't give me any break to prepare and wouldnt.
Which are some of the schools that could possibly admit me with this information.
Thanks,
JohnSmith

Hello johnsmith84, thanks for your question.

As I wrote in the thread, a low score is not necessarily an insurmountable challenge, but with a 530 score, you do face an upward-facing battle. Please review the advice I provide above. Check the median/mean GMAT scores of your target schools, as well as the middle 80% range of GMAT scores. If your 530 falls within that middle 80%, I think you have a shot. Otherwise, it will not be an easy slog.

More importantly, if you believe your score does not reflect your ability, I recommend taking the GMAT again!

Hope this helps.

Best of luck,
Brian
