610 (Q48 V25) - Retake ??? Is it worth ?? [#permalink] New post 23 Jul 2012, 02:06
Hi folks,

Just came back from my test. It was a big disappointment, considering my KAPLAN and MGMAT scores :(
I had started preparing 2 months back with first MGMAT - 630
And then on to Kaplan with 640 -> 650 -> 690
and finally MGMAT 2 with 710.

Even through the test, I never felt as if I am doing bad, I know SC has been a big screw up for me in all practice tests. But can that bring the score to as low as 25.
Anyway what I seek here is your opinion on should I retake the test with thorough preparation.

My goalset:
1> ISB
2>INSEAD
3> Any good School.

My Current Career Position: Working with Microsoft - Almost 3 yrs of experiance and making 1.2 Million INR (24,000 $) P.A
Why MBA: Money and a wish to be able to start my own enterprise.

My Negatives: Quant has always been strong, consistently around 46-55 but my VA is pathetic. I am not an avid reader  Dont remember when i finished reading a book (apart from academic books).

Please advise, should i slowly build up on my preparation over the year to write test next year (Can i breach that 720+ mark).
Or should I concentrate on moving ahead in the current career ladder ??

You are in the most competitive applicant pool. You need to be a super star to get into INSEAD with 610. If I were you, I would retake GMAT again. You have ample time before the first and second round of applications. If you can take some time off and prepare for your GMAT, it will help you. Unfortunately, GMAT is one of the important parameters. You need to get a decent score for your target schools.

Take some external help on verbal. There are many companies/coaching institutes who can provide customized help on verbal. It is money worth spending.

Good luck!

Thanks Interview bay.

I know its a score that will get me no where. That is the reason why I want to go for that retake, But only thing which worries me is what if I fail yet again  .

I know that's a silly reason, but I have always been poor in VA (Have tried CAT in India thrice and acheived 95-98% overall but was screwed always in VA), still I didn't put any sincere effort to improve it.

Where exactly should I start to gain that confidence, because while solving QA questions, I am always confident that I am doing it right but the same is missing big time for VA.

I am targeting a retake in June/July next year - and I am thinking of starting my prep from December, till then I am planning to improve my career prospect and also work on improving my profile for MBA schools.

You've practiced Kaplan tests and MGMAT tests... what about GMATPrep test, the official one, which will tell you the most accurate score of all of these practice tests. I think you should've incorporated that in your studies, seems like others were misleading you.

You definitely need to retake GMAT and score a lot higher to be competitive at INSEAD. Perhaps buy some additional study material that focuses specifically on your weaknesses.
