640--->720 (Q47, V41) [#permalink]

This is my first time posting but I have been following the forums a lot and learned a great deal.

Just got back from the test center and am excited I got a 720 (Q 47, V 41).

My journey with the GMAT started In Nov 2011, when I decided to register for the test. Studied the whole of Kaplan Verbal Workbook and did the GMAT prep tests.

GPrep 1: 690 (Q46, V39)
GPrep2: 690 (Q47, V38)

I went to take my first test in Dec 2011 feeling very confident. I got a 640(Q39, V38). Was devastated when I got this score because I thought I would do better. My quant was way below my capability and my biggest problem during the test was time management. I decided to retake the exam and registered for the exam in March 2012 (2 months after the first).

I bought the Kaplan GMAT800 book, which I studied cover to cover, and the GMAT Official Guide 12th edition (did a some of the questions).
Most importantly I focused on taking the simulation tests as much as I could. I was surprised by how few the repeated questions were on the GPrep exams.

Below are all my scores: (3 through 12 are all repeat tests, did not delete or re upload the software, just repeatedly took teh Gpreps.

January, 2012
G Prep 3: 680 (Q42, V40)
G prep 4: 620 (Q40, V 35) WTF!!!
G Prep 5: 760 (Q48, V47), Apparently, this is the best I could ever do.
G Prep 6: 670 (Q46, V36), Could I have a little more consistency? Please!
G Prep 7: 710 (Q48, V40)

February, 2012
Was surprised that I was still not acing the Gpreps even if some questions were repeated. Not a good sign!

G Prep 8: 710 (Q 48, V39)
G Prep 9: 720 (Q 48, Q41)

Decided to take a break mid Feb. Continued to work on the official guide questions.

March:
G Prep 10: 710 (Q47, V41)
G Prep 11: 700 (Q49, V36) Happy with the quant, freaked out about the verbal. this is 2 days before the exam
G Prep 12: 700 (Q50, V35) The highest I could ever do in quant, and the lowest I ever got in V. Again, WTF!!!, this is the day before the 2nd exam.

At this point I was very comfortable with the pace and questions. I knew which questions to not even attempt at all.
Also I was reassured to know I could get 23/37 questions right, get 14 wrong and still get a Q50. Mentally, this made me comfortable with guessing and skipping those questions I knew would be difficult or take a lot of my time.
Went home just did a few more OG questions. Got some good sleep.

I got up this morning. Mentally, I was hoping for a Q48, V40. A realistic average of all my G prep scores. I went into the exam. paced myself very well and finished both the Quant and the verbal with an extra 10 mins each.

Clicked report scores and blinked. Boom!!! 720 (Q47, Q41). Very happy with my score. Will never take GMAT again. In a way a 640 at the first take made me appreciate a 720. I swear if I had got a 720 at first sitting I would not have been happy with the score.

ADVICE: do the GPrep tests as many times as you can, until you can do them with your eyes closed. Also read the OG cover to cover until you are comfortable with all the questions and answers. If you can consistently get above 700 on the Gprep repeatedly, say 10 consecutive times, almost guaranteed you will hit 700 in the real exam. The real exam is very similar.

Now wondering whether to wait for next year or apply for R3. What do you guys think?
Thank you all for your support, even though I was not an active member. Felt compelled to post today. Good luck everyone.

hi knoxv1,

Thanks for your advise. I plan on doing this. How often do you take the GMATPrep is it once every week? Do you review all questions and answers after taking GMATPrep or just the ones you got wrong?

Well, I guess it depends on how long you have before the real exam. I tried to do at least 2 every week. But I had 2 months to prepare. Also, I just reviewed only the ones I got wrong. Some I continued to get them wrong repeatedly, since I never got to know what the correct answers were. Overall, the real GMAT questions are very similar, so I would say the more comfortable you get with the GMAT prep questions and the OG questions, the easier the exam will be. Good luck.

Sounds great, this is what I have in mind.

Now, regarding your question. If you think you still have time (for recommendations, essays, etc..) and you really want to start this year then go for R3.

could you please give an idea - on average how many correct can give V 38 + ?

I think it depends on the level of difficulty of the questions. On average I was getting an average of 8-10 questions wrong on the verbal. I hope this is helpful.

congrats, never thought about redoing GMAT Prep more than 1-2 times, I guess it will be a good idea to see as many of the problems as possible even if 30% are repeats.
