640... retake advice

hey guys,
I found this site while searching for some gmat test prep, and I'm kinda (positively) astonished about the existence of this community.
I took the gmat last week and scored 640 (Q44 V34). My school states "gmat scores should be in excess of 650" so I will retake the test. It's not only to reach the requirements of my school but also some sort of personal goal. I've been studying for the GMAT quite intensively and the score was a little bit of a disappointment for me, since my personal goal was to crack the 700.
The AWA was quite easy... I did not get any results on that yet, but I feel quite confident. The quant part was also not that difficult but I ran out of time and had to guess one question, which turned out to be quite easy to solve. I'm pretty good in the quant part, but I take way too much time. Additionally, the aircon of the building collapsed and therefore the supervisor opened the window to let some fresh air inside.... great idea, since outside there was a construction site making a lot of noise.... ok ok, lets not try to blame it on someone else.
The verbal part was as difficult as expected. From my prep I figured that SC is my strongest section, and CR and RC needs quite some improvement.
I'd like to mention that I find this CAT-System a little awkward. On my prep test I scored between 600 and 700. On the 700 score, I answered less questions correctly than on a 650 score.... anyways...
I need your advice to do better on my retake. On one day, I feel I reached the maximum of my ability, the next day everything seems a lot easier.
Prep for my first GMAT:
- gmat 2004 edition
- gmat800 05/06 edition
I am a US citizen, but I grew up in a non-english country. My English is fluent but not native. I even had to look up some words during my gmat prep.
From now on, I will check out this forum regularly and use an error-log.
What would you suggest to boost my score? Was my 700 aim to high?
Thanks in advance!
