This post was
BOOKMARKED
I gave my GMAT on 5th Dec and scored paltry 650 (Q#48, V#31, IR#7,AWA#4). I was really shocked to see my verbal score. For IR, I had guessed at least 5 out of 12 questions and was sure about only 3 questions so I was surprised to see 7 (82 %ile) and for Verbal , I don’t know what should I say, I guess my disgusting score speaks for itself…

My Sore Log:
Exam------------date---------Toatl-QA-VA-IR
MGMAT1------- (20-Feb-13) 570 40 29 5.2 (Without any preparation)
GMAT Prep1.1 (03-Jun-13) 630 (Without any preparation, I think i wasted valuable time between Feb and June)
MGMAT2------- (03-Aug-13) 560 40 28 3.87
MGMAT3------- (31-Aug-13) 600 45 29 2.33
GMAT Prep1.2 (20-Oct-13) 660 48 32
Veritag Prep-- (27-Oct-13) 680 48 35 3
MGMAT4------- (03-Nov-13) 590 44 27 1.7
Kaplan--------- (09-Nov-13) 660 49 26 2
GMAT Prep 2.1 (20-Nov-13) 710 49 37 5
GMAT Prep 2.2 (24-Nov-13) 720 49 39 8
GMAT Prep A1- (01-Dec-13) 700 49 35 6
Actual GMAT----(05-Dec-13) 650 48 31 7

I was really disappointed by 650 because I had scored 700+ consecutively thrice (within 15 days) before actual GMAT. If I had got 670 it could have been bad score but 650 is just my worst nightmare.

Resources used:
MGMAT strategy guides (All except CR & SC)
Powerscore CR bible
RC Grail
OG12
OG Quant Review
OG Verbal review.
I don’t think I have scored enough to pass my judgement about any of these books but there are few things which I would like to share. I really think MGMAT math’s strategy guides are must if someone wants to score 47+. These are best math books for GMAT. I also did whole MGMAT Advanced quant as well (I don't care even if this 'as well' is redundant here, I am really sick of it...), some of the strategies mentioned in this book are worthwhile but I feel GMAT Prep PS & CR documents are more representative of actual GMAT exam than MGMAT Advanced Quant.

My Biggest mistake:
I had decided to do the GMAT Prep questions in the last week (Downloaded from souvik101990’s post). I just saw the last page and thought of there are just 150 CR & 170 SC question’s I thought I could do these in 2-3 days before the exam but when I had completed 72nd question I saw it restarted from 1 again then I realized there are 400+ problems and I cannot do all of those in just 2 days… same thing was with CR, PS & DS. My biggest mistake of all was I did not do any GMAT Prep RC passages.

Why I got so low score in Verbal.

My last three GMAT Prep verbal score was 37, 39 & 35 but when I analyzed these score I had got just 1,0,0 questions wrong for RC in those three exams and in actual GMAT I got two very difficult RCs and once I was down with RC it impacted by CR & SC as well.

My Plan:
I haven’t decided anything as of now, I am just very disappointed. I have decided to go ahead with my application with one of my target school because its deadline is in December. Still evaluating my options….

Thanks for sharing your debrief.

I understand your condition, but 650 is a good score if you are planning to apply to any college except the top 20 or so. If you can make other parts of your application shine, then you can get into a good school. Re taking GMAT is also a good option.

I am in a similar condition as yours. I was consistently scoring around 650 (Q 50 V 28) in my mocks, but got only 540(Q 50, V 15) in actual GMAT. In my exam RCs, my weakest area, were tough, but SCs were horrifying. Most of the SCs in the real exam very very big sentences, with a major part being underlined. There were fully underlined SC questions as well. Talking about CR, I don't know if I got them correct or not.

I am again preparing for the GMAT and my exam is scheduled within a month. I am very weak at RCs, could you please tell me if I should consider doing RC grail. Also, please share your review about RC grail.

You have got nice Quant score buddy.

RC Grail is OK book, may be its good. There are 60 practice passages (I think 20 easy, 30 medium & 10 difficult). They have also included strategies for taking different types of questions. There are few mistakes in this book and for few answers reasoning doesn't sound right. But this is a nice source of RCs. I used to do 3 passages per day from this book and I saw my RC hit rate increasing.
GMAT Prep, OG12, OG13 & Verbal Review RC passages (specially the later ones) are more representative of actual GMAT RC.
You can download GMAT Prep RC collection from this forum.

Thanks buddy for all your help.

Actually I have SC Grail and RC99, so I got confused between RC Grail and RC99. I don't have RC Grail :( .
RC99 has 99 passages out of which 33 are easy,33 are medium and 33 are difficult. Both RC99 and RC Grail are published by Aristotle.

Should I go ahead and do passages from RC99?
Also, where I can get the pdf of RC Grail?

If you have less time left then go for "GMAT Prep, OG12, OG13 & Verbal Review RC passages" these four resources have enough passages to keep you busy for a month if you go for 3 passages per day.
RC99 has some more difficult RCs than actual RCs in GMAT and also there few ambiguous answers. Its been discontinued and replaced with RC Grail. Do it only if you want some additional practice material and have enough time.

There is no pdf for RC Grail. You can purchase directly from Aristotle website or ebay india.

I have already done OG13 thrice, VR 2nd Edition once and GMAT Prep multiple times.
Thanks for the information.

After deliberating for a while, I have decided to give GMAT second and final shot.

I had applied to one of my target college and got a 'ding' without interview  . I guess my low GMAT score did it to me.

Another thing which I believe could have caused 'ding' is very late application (I applied almost on last day). I knew one person having almost same profile as that of me ( but with substantial higher experience than me) had received a call on low 600 almost 2 months before my application.

Anyways I have decided to focus next one month on GMAT and get over this hunger game

Congrats on your decision, this is really brave.
If you guys are running out of CR and RC and want to push for something more "hardcore", I recommend to give a shout at LSAT Official questions. They are very similar to GMAT, well written, better than any crap that Prep companies out there offer.

Please, see a sample attached.

Good lucky guys!
