660 - Considering Msc MiM in Europe. Retake ? Advice ? HELP

HI everyone,

I have just taken my GMAT this morning and i got a 660... :( Got a 42 in Quant and 40 in Verbal.
I have a lot of questions for you guys but before let me shed a bit of light on my background.

GMAT: I have studied on KAPLAN mostly and MGMAT for SC and RC. In Kaplan CATs, i constantly scored over 670 and got a few 720s... with constantly scoring 49 or 50 in Quant. So when I saw my 42 in Quant today, my Jaw just broke, that's how low it fell. I used to score 36 sometimes 37 38 in Verbal but never more and today got a 40 (english is not my native language). Before submitting my score, I really thought I aced Maths and did alright in Verbal (Guessed the last 5 questions).

My question is whether i should re-take it or if 660 is ok for Business Schools in Europe (HEC, ESSEC, ESCP , LSE, Imperial, Bocconi, Cambridge...)

My background :


Undergrad: I m graduating from a top 10 UK university (Top 5 for my subject) in Economics and I will hopefully get a first (=A) (got a high first in my second year).
Work Exp: 14 months Banking Internship in a Major Bank in Risk -> Highly selective program and I hope it will really be a big + on applications
Letters: I will get some good letters from Work.
Extra: A lot of sports at University level + 3 months volunteer work and overall good involvement in societies...

So my most important question is: Can I get into these schools with a 660 and considering the other parts of my applications ?

I really hope someone can help me,

I´m sure you can get into some of those schools, since your score is just slightly under their average scores, isn´t it?
But if you scored continually 49/50 on Kaplan mocks, you should retake the exam with preparing more efficiently for the actual Gmat quant questions. What I wanna say here is, that you should do 2-4 of the official Gmatprep mocks to get more familiar with the official questions and imo you should buy the extra questions package, too. Those questions were closest to the actual test questions from my experience.
The better score will also give you higher chances for a scholarship. And in your case it looks like you could get a better score.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed, I'm sure i could get a better score... The maths were just nothing like what i've worked for (probably because i didnt do well enough to hit these hard questions on which normally i'm confident).

For the schools i want to apply to, I should be fine (in the average from what the schools told me when i called them) for all of them apart HEC. Then comes LSE and Imperial where you have to have 48+ in quant but you can also not take the gmat and apply if you come from a UK university with a mathy degree ( which I do) but however GMAT does increase your chances.

So i'm still wondering whether to retake it or not... It's a lot of efforts of course and would be worth it if i get it.
I also think my weakness is stress handling rather than the Maths itself... When i went in the GMAT center, I was like **** my life is at stake here... and its also very hard to get these negative messages from your brain saying what if i dont do as great bladibablahalah.... I'm currently taking a break and enjoying a 'normal' non- 80 hours a week life and will take this time to call up schools send CVs other and see what their advice is...

Thanks for the advice, I can see you took the gmat twice and that worked out pretty well for you. Can you explain how you did it the second time ?

Sure dude, in my case the big difference in the score was due to a lot of factors that came together. Here check out this link for my Gmat experience, it will explain things and it may help you!!

As for the math were just nothing like what you have worked for I can only repeat that I would recommend that you do 2 (better 4) of the official Gmatprep software mock tests and that you get the extra question package. Those tests and questions were the closest to the actual test IMO.

Regarding the stress handling on test day I can´t really help you because I handle these kind of things differently. Only thing that occurs to me is: Focus and concentration.

By the way, apart from the MBAs I applied to I also consider some MIMs in Europe, but rather the one in Mannheim (as Im from Germany, tuition is extremely low) and the ones in Spain at IE and Esade.

My recommendation: take 4 gmat prep mocks and check your scores before retaking.
