670 in chicago - opinions please? [#permalink] New post 09 Apr 2004, 13:23
hi there,
i'm new to this site, but browsed and got some good info here in the few weeks before my test.
a little background ...
i have been working at a major financial institution for about 3 yrs now (since graduating from miami of ohio in 2001).
my initial plan was to *hopefully* get into the PT program at kellogg and have the bank help me out financially. once i got support from my manager, i went down the path of tackling the GMAT.
took the veritas prep course from jan-mar. have read mixed comments here about the course ... IMHO, it was great. primarily b/c we had a FABULOUS instructor, went to stanford, etc.
the material was just OK - many of the books had spelling, grammar errors (ones that weren't supposed to be there! )

took another month after the class ended to study on my own. quant was my weakness and i went at it hard nearly every day.

took the test on 4/6 and scored a 670.
i was hitting in the mid 600's on my practice tests. (also studied math from the kaplan 800 book, which i found very helpful.)

670 was the low end of my goal. i wasn't devastated, but had been hoping to hit 700.

well, the bank i work for recently got bought out by another bank ... i'm sure you know which one. and i don't know what's going to happen in the future. i'm not freaking out about losing my job, but there's NO way they're going to let me start tuition reimbursement now.

so i'm kind of stalled right now ... thinking maybe i'll go FT and pay for it myself. the point is, i'm not in a hurry to get any applications in.

i'll stop rambling ...
but i want to know if you think i should or need to re-take the test. i honestly don't know if i want to spend the time/money to take it again.

do you think i can get into kellogg PT or FT w/ this score?
i have a very high GPA from undergrad, but only 3 yrs work experience. (solid, promising career track though.)
opinions wanted!!! :-D
THANK YOU!

670 is great. If you have solid work exp / extra-curricular activities and a good GPA, I would not see why you should retake the exam. In top schools, once you fall within the ballpark, retaking the exam may be a waste of time. Someone having 750 may not necessarily have more chance getting admitted than someone having 670 if the latter has stronger leadership and experience and fits the model seeked by the Bschool. If you do take the exam again, just don't elect to send your score and do send it if you get a better one. Otherwise, your 670 should be sufficient. Good luck

I just attended the chicago Info sessions and they told me that their average GMAAT for PT program is 660.....

I dont know about kellogg...personally I think Chicago is better than Kelogg...But anyways..I think it is enough if u have 660...

Well, I think coming from the financial industry, you would be a better fit with Chicago which is clearly known for their strength in finance
