670 to 730 and how I did it... [#permalink] New post 13 Feb 2013, 11:42
After the Kaplan course last year, I primarily focused on taking the GMAT test over and over through their online resources. For the most part, my scores centered around 650. On the actual GMAT in November, I ended up a with a disappointing 670 (36V, 46Q). I resolved to do better, and signed up for Knewton based upon feedback in these forums. I found the course thorough for the most part and it definitely did help my math. However, I continued to score in the 600s on my practice test.

I signed up for another GMAT in January but I ended up canceling half way through the quant section because I was still hungover from partying the weekend before (the test was on a Tuesday).

Signed up for another test in February. Since I had exhausted both Knewton and Kaplan up to this point, I went back to the MGMAT books I bought years before. I went through the math portions specifically and only focused on completing the challenging portions - that is the challenge questions in the MGMAT books and the challenge math questions from the 12th edition. After completing that, I signed up for the MGMAT CATs and tooks 5 tests prior to test day. The scores were as follows:

670 43Q, 38V
650 45Q, 34V
630 43Q, 33V
650 44Q, 35V
740 48Q, 43V (day before the test) (I thought this was an outlier because of a lot of repeat questions)

I found myself continually making stupid mistakes because I failed to read the full question or lost focus. During the breaks in the actual test, I would momentarily meditate and just repeat 'focus, focus, focus, details, details, details...'

When I clicked to button to see the test scores, I was happy to see a:
730 50Q, 39V.

Thanks for the postings to all of you. Your recommendations and resources helped me get this far and I just wanted to share my experience. Good luck!!!

Awesome, congratulations! Serious props for sticking with it after all of those disappointments along the way. It's a ton of fun to see somebody do better on the real thing than on most of their practice tests--I wish that happened more often.

Good luck with your applications!
