690 GMAT - retake [#permalink] New post 11 Sep 2004, 22:47
Hi,

I would like to get into a MBA school in Fall 2005. Here is a peek at my profile:

Nationality: Indian

GMAT: 690 (49 Q, 34 V)

Undergraduate School: Regional Engg College

Undergraduate GPA: 71 out of 100, Passed with Honors

Work Experience:

Six years as IT consultant

Extracurricular:
I am the manager of a cricket team which is part of a non-profit organization. I have played an active role in the development of this organization. Did similar things during my undergrad as well.

I would like to apply to Wharton, Chicago, HBS, Kellog in that order.

Given my nationality and the competitiveness that comes along with it :( , what are my chances at these schools? Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, should I retake GMAT.

Thank you for your time.

Hi
Am not an expert - but have read many posts on this forum and other ones like businessweek etc. Too many Indians have a typical profile - 720+GMAT, 4-7 years work-ex in IT and a lot of community work or extra-currics to show with a GPA of abt 3.3+.

So i wont discourage but would ask whether you can differentiate yourself in terms of your work-ex? If you can write exceptional essays and differentiate yourself a bit - you stand a chance.
I for one would recommend you to retake GMAT and get a score of 750 plus. That atleast will get you a favorable review of your essays at the top 5.

Otherwise - you might have to consider Carnegie mellon, MIT Sloan or some such place.

I think your chances at HBS are very poor and would encourage you to drop that school. You do have a competitive profile for the other schools, but so do many other Indian applicantswith an IT background. I can't recommend additional or alternative schools without knowing what you want to do post-MBA.

Retaking the GMAT: A higher GMAT may be of marginal benefit mainly because your cohort is so competitive. If you are not confident that your GMAT will go up, I would skip it. I think your time would be better spent now on essays, school research, and possibly applying to additional schools.

Good luck!
