700 in GMAT Prep. What can be expected in Real test ? [#permalink] New post 22 Jul 2009, 12:12
I took the GMATPrep1 today and scored 700. Q 49 , V37. Did a few silly mistakes in both. And could have scored a bit more.

But overall, the level of difficulty of Verbal in GMATPrep1 was simple. Or may be because i got a RC which i had already solved in OG .
Does anybody agree to me on this ? Will the Verbal be more tough than this ? Or same as this ?
How much variation did test takers see in their scores Vs the GMATPrep1 scores ?

I have a GMAT scheduled for 5th Aug. I hope i can touch 700 in the real test as well.

GMATPRep to real is +/- 40

Test takes in the forum have got more realistic scores through MGMAT with +/- 20 range.

GMATPrep is the most accurate indicator of your true ability. If you can score 700+ on GMATPrep2, you should feel confident that you will get a 700+ on test day (assuming you can stay calm throughout the exam).

Your analysis of the GMAT Verbal section is a bit dangerous and inaccurate. You scored V37, so you didn't see very many of the most difficult questions. There's a significant difference between the difficulty of questions at the V37 level and the those at the V45 level, which is why V45 is in the ~98th percentile. You can benefit greatly by simply practicing all three areas in the Verbal section, but you'll see an even greater improvement if you study the underlying rules of sentence correction with a book like MGMAT SC.

Most test takers underestimate the difficulty of the Verbal section - don't let that happen to you :)

You can see the full spectrum of GMATPrep Scores here:

GMAT Score Estimator/Calculator

Just move the slider to the very left and right to get the worst/best case scenarios.
I got 740 the day before I got 750, so your chances are good!

Good Luck!

I am not underestimating Verbal. But just wanted to know what are the mix of questions I might get for a 700-730 score in actual GMAT ? Will they be same in difficulty as in GMATPrep1 or even more difficult. ?

I would say definitely harder. In my experience the real test was "trickier" if that's a good explanation - more subtle differences between the right/wrong answers.

Just took the Kaplan free online test. Scored 720. This test was much easier than the tests they have in CD.
Any thoughts ?

It is easier and not representative - that's what most report... sorry.

I have also taken the gmatprep today, scored a Q45 and V40 for a total of 700. I was quite amazed to see that even after the silly mistakes and 17 questions wrong in the Quant, I got a 45! God knows how the algorithm works!

If posting about GMATPrep/Power Prep, post in the thread dedicated for it.

Also, don't cherry pick on other's thread.

Locked.
