720 thanks to an aweful experience at the test centre [#permalink] New post 08 Jun 2011, 02:03
Well came up with a disappointing 720, i say disappointing because i think i could have done better. My pre-Gmat test scores were

MGMAT 1 - 720
MGMAT 2 - 750
MGMAT 3 - 770
MGMAT 4 - 770
MGMAT 5 - 770
MGMAT 6 - 770

GMATPREP 1 - 700 ( 3 Weeks before the GMAT )
GMATPREP 2 - 760 ( 5 Days before the GMAT )

I went in all pepped by, trying my best to shake off the nervousness that has accompanied me to all my previous takes on the GMAT ( This was my third take ). I read some posts on GMATclub and following some advice took some extra clothing with me, in case it got COLD. Well on arriving, I was told that taking in extra clothing was not allowed. They did'nt even allow handkerchiefs to be taken inside !!!
Well anycase, so i picked up my bottle of water and started to proceed towards the entry formalities only to be told that taking water was also not allowed.
On reaching inside i found that the air conditioning was not working and the place felt like an oven. Delhi temperatures in summers go up to 48deg C .
It was hard to write on those plastic sheets with sweat dripping down all over the body.
I made an official complaint to the invigilator only to be told that they are working on it. Some how i managed to finish off my AWAs and took the break to go to the washroom and try and do away with the sweat. To my disbelief there was maintenance work going on in the washroom too and i had to stand out for 2 mins ( waste 2 mins of my break ) to get into the wash room.
Well i somehow recomposed and went in to proceed with my Quant section but the sweat killed it for me. By the time i had my second break i knew that i had messed by in my Quant and tried my best to focus on the verbal but it was too late.
Managed a 48 in Quant and a 40 in verbal !!!
After completion of the test the invigilator apologized for the aweful conditions but it was too late by then. On reaching home i shot a mail to GMAC requesting a reattempt as the excruciating circumstance caused during the test were beyond my control.
Have received a reply from them with a incident number to a case opened against my name. I hope they give me another attempt at a better facility !!!

I know this is a little late, but 720 is a fantastic score. I think if the rest of your application is solid, it doesn't matter if you have 720 or 780...

I have heard some universities require indian candidates to have a gmat around 740+ just because there are so many of them who score at that level to begin with.

Better luck next time though!

You should be okay. I dont know brazil's stats but I think you should be fine. I haven't come accross any brazilians that took the gmat to begin with so you are in a good standing with a 720. Congrats on the score!

Hii IEsailor, congratulations to you for getting such a good score withstanding the poor conditions at the test center. If you were regularly getting 770 on Manhattan cats then most probably poor conditions might have taken a toll on you and your score. But 720 is still an awesome score! Also, please tell me if questions on test were of comparable difficulty to questions on gmatprep or harder than those. Also did you gave test in that yousuf sarai center ? Guess what, I will write my gmat at the same place on 23rd this month :( Hopefully the AC works that day and I don't get roasted in an Owen.

HI Aj85, I took the test at the Yousuf Sarai centre and the centre is a good clean nice place to take the test. The testing facility is very conducive to giving a good environment, with the exception of that day. The staff is very cordial and welcoming and even that day, when i had this horrible experience, the test invigilators themselves said that they would forward my protest to the authorities at Pearson Vue.
Well during the actual GMAT exam, i got very different questions in terms of difficulty and subject concentration than what was there during my GMATPrep exam but then this depends on how exhaustive your attempts were to squeeze the GMATPrep. In this website there are ways to take the GMATPrep a number of times and squeeze out all question. I felt that the difficulty level of the manhattan Gmat questions was quite comparable to what i got on the actual GMAT.
All the best for the 23rd.
