730 BUT 5/8 IR - retake for top 10? [#permalink] New post 24 Aug 2013, 07:54
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to throw this out there to see if I can get some advice on whether it's worth retaking the GMAT to improve my IR score.

In summary:

Q48 V41 ~ 730
AWA: 5.5/6
IR: 5/8

Current working at one of the big 3 consulting firms so my B-school ambitions are focused on the top 10.

If I were applying this year, I would not have thought twice about it as IR is still relatively new. I was fairly proactive in taking my GMAT this summer (right before full-time work started) and will not be applying until fall 2015 - by then I'm guessing there should be more correlative data on IR and performance.

Thoughts?

Thanks :)

Nah, no need. Take a stock of things after a year - year and a half. You never know how schools will view the IR score then. It may be the same or not appreciably different. Or, they might consider anything between 4-8 as a tick in the check box. I'd say you are pretty safe. Spend time on taking leadership roles at work and outside.

I also think you are safe, but keep your eyes out for the mean score - right now it's about a 4.34, and you are above it. But in a year or so, this mean might increase as test-takers become more comfortable with this section. So I would say, don't retake right now, but keep an eye out for potential shifts.

You have good GMAT score. I don't think there should be a need to retake GMAT to improve IR score. This is a relatively new section, and b-schools may not take decision solely on this particular ‘weakness’. The incremental benefit that you would get out of higher IR score would be much less compared to spending all your energies on application essays. If you get a low score in a particular section, schools would try to assess your candidacy by looking at other aspects of your application. Good luck!
