730 - Q48, V42 - Ist attempt [#permalink] New post 12 Nov 2010, 00:58
Hi Gmatclub,
I am yet another guy posting in the forum only after completing the GMAT. All this while I have only been reading others' posts. Here is a brief of my GMAT experience.

I took GMAT today and got a 730 (96%) with 48 (82%) in Quants and 42 (95%) in Verbal. I could have got a 740 or 750. But no regrets! I am an Indian/28 yrs/entrepreneur. I started my gmat journey about 45 days back. Here are the materials I used.
- MGMAT all books
- CR Powerscore
- OG

I suppose too many people have reviewed these materials already and I will just add that MGMAT books are actually good. I am not a maths guy. I have a degree in commerce and a CFA. I found the MGMAT books adequate to build a good foundation in just a few days.

For practice, I used to search for 700-800 tags in gmatclub, especially in DS and SC. I strongly believe the posts in gmatclub are all that you require to breach 700. Another excellent source for practice is the GMATCLUB tests. However please do not get jittery if your percentile turns out to be sub-60 or sub-70. I found the DS questions in gmatclub tests particularly useful. Unfortunately I could not finish all the tests. Here are my scores from gmatclub tests.

Test Correct Total % Correct msec Percentile
m01 34 37 92% 99.6735 sec 94%
m02 30 37 81% 104.9081 sec 65%
m03 30 37 81% 118.4357 sec 79%
m04 30 36 83% 124.4561 sec 70%
m05 20 37 54% 121.5761 sec 17%
m06 34 37 92% 121.6302 sec 96%
m07 30 36 83% 125.0100 sec 76%
m08 30 37 81% 121.6343 sec 87%
m09 30 37 81% 106.6666 sec 82%
m10 27 37 73% 114.2958 sec 61%
m11 33 37 89% 113.1724 sec 88%
m12 26 37 70% 115.0304 sec 52%
m13 31 37 84% 114.3586 sec 82%
m14 29 37 78% 118.2370 sec 76%
m15 29 37 78% 120.6504 sec 75%
m16 29 37 78% 119.8668 sec 73%
m17 30 37 81% 116.3959 sec 69%
m18 31 37 84% 110.3940 sec 80%

I somehow could not cross 30 in most of the tests. The gmatclub tests are different from actual GMAT in that the questions in gmatclub are difficult while those in actual GMAT are tricky. However the gmatclub tests help in building endurance. If you get a string of questions correct, the gmat constantly keeps increasing the difficulty and so taking gmatclub tests helps to get similar experiences.

I went through the study materials for about 2 weeks and started giving full-length practices tests. In my opinion, gmat is actually more about handling pressure than showcasing quants or verbal skills. If there is no timer, I am sure most of us would get almost all questions correct. Taking a number of practice tests was the only way I could constantly check my ability to manage time. First it was difficult to race with the clock but in the final exam I finished quants with 4 mins to spare and verbal with 3 mins to spare. I took 19 full length practice tests. Here are the scores I got from practice tests.

Test Date Total TP V VP Q QP V-Wrong Q-Wrong v% q%
1 MGMAT 9-Oct 710 94% 41 93% 46 79% 14 18 66% 51%

5 MGMAT 17-Oct 670 89% 36 81% 45 77% 16 18 61% 51%
7 GMATPrep V2 19-Oct 740 98% 44 97% 48 82% 4 11 90% 70%
8 MGMAT 22-Oct 710 94% 40 91% 47 81% 12 16 71% 57%

12 Veritas 1-Nov 650 79% 33 66% 49 86% 13 6 68% 84%
13 Kaplan 2-Nov 620 81% 33 66% 48 82% 14 5 66% 86%
14 Kaplan 3-Nov 770 99% 44 97% 50 95% 6 5 85% 86%
15 MGMAT 4-Nov 780 99% 48 99% 51 99% 4 4 90% 89%
16 Kaplan Online 6-Nov 750 98% 46 99% 47 97% 3 2 93% 95%
17 GMATPrep V2 7-Nov 730 97% 41 93% 49 90% 8 10 80% 73%
18 GMATPrep V1 9-Nov 770 99% 47 99% 50 95% 5 8 88% 78%
19 GMATPrep V1 11-Nov 780 99% 46 99% 51 99% 6 2 85% 95%
GMAT 12-Nov 730 96% 42 95% 48 82%

V-wrong and Q-wrong are the number of questions that I got wrong in verbal and quants respectively. The last two columns show the percentage of correct answers.

Even though MGMAT says that there 6 full tests, the sixth one is actually below-par. In each of the first 5 tests I found 20-22 questions each in quants and verbal in the 700-800 difficulty level while in the final test there were hardly 4-5 in each section at 700-800. So the MGMAT tests, excluding the final one, are good. Same with Kaplan. I found that the fourth test had too many repetitions from the first 3. I tried Kaplan online free test, which also had repetitions from the CD tests. I tried both old and new versions of GMAT Prep. You can see that my actual gmat score is the same as the second GMAT Prep V2 score. The first version appeared a bit too easy. I suggest the club members to rely on GMAT Prep and MGMAT (first 5 tests). Kaplan tends to be more difficult while Veritas is too scary. Try Kaplan and Veritas only if you run out of tests from MGMAT and Gmatprep.

The GMAT scoring algorithm is actually intelligent. However I strongly suggest to focus on the number of wrong questions during practice. Even though there is no direct relationship between wrong questions and percentile, this is the only concrete measure of progress during practice. In MGMAT you can score in 700s even if you get 40% of the questions wrong in verbal and quants. I think in actual GMAT I might have got 8-10 questions wrong in quants and 6-7 wrong in verbal. Again, dont try to decipher the GMAT system. Instead, focus on minimizing the number of incorrect questions in practice tests. I think this is the way to measure progress for normal GMAT takers who target 700. Leave the research on GMAT scoring algorithm to test prep companies and to gmat takers who target 780.

I did not intend this 'brief' to be so long. Sorry for wasting your time!

PS: Please practice using ear-plugs. I had never used these before and heard echos of my thoughts in my head when I used them at the center.

Thanks GMATCLUB! IOU..
Siva.
