750 GMAT, McKinsey BA, 2.5 GPA (Eng.): HBS/Stanford [#permalink] New post 24 Mar 2014, 19:01
Hi Team,

What are my chances with:
750 GMAT
2.51 GPA (BS. Industrial Engineering, Georgia Tech)
2yrs work experience as BA at McKinsey
Confident in my essays and recommendations

Looking at:
HBS
Stanford
MIT Sloan
London Business School
Booth

Undergrad GPA is extremely low. There was an upwards trend through out the 4 years (went from 1.6 to 3.7), and was initially low as I working part-time while attending classes

What can I best do to offset my low GPA allowing the reviewers to focus on what matters: story/work experience?

Well, the good news is that Stanford, HBS, etc. have a nice history of accepting GT grads and know the grades are low--even lower than other engineering schools. Since the IE program at Tech is #1 in the country (a stat you should definitely tout in your application), your upward trend in grades and your GMAT should more than make up for the GPA deficiency. McKinsey is a very selective firm as well, so their choosing you to work there is a good stamp of approval. One issue may be only 2 years of WE. The average is getting up towards 4+, so you will be competing against others with more work experience. Still, it's not unusual for someone from one of the bulge bracket consulting firms to get in with only a couple of years of you tell a good story and tie in your reasons for wanting the MBA into a compelling narrative which includes your post MBA vision. AT the end of the day, GPA is one of the most forgivable components of the application, so focus on your story and let us know if you need help pulling it all together. We have specialists from all your target schools who can shed some very helpful light on the process.

BTW, even though GPA is more flexible than say, GMAT, and even though GT is a tough engineering school without grade inflation, you should still address why you had a lower GPA in the optional essay, or in HBS case, just a one sentence acknowledgement that you should/could have done better might go a long way.
