Hi all,
I have been a regular in the forum and GC is the only forum I visit w.r.t.
I wrote my GMAT today and got a 770 :D
I got 51 in Quant which is only 98 percentile!!!!!!!!! :O -- I thought it was 99 percentile
and I got a 46 in Verbal which is 99
and the total 770 is also 99

I started preparing a couple of months back when I did all the questions of OG and did the 2 GMATPrep tests
I got a 720 and possibly a 760 (because I got Q50 V46 then and that kind of sums to 760, though I get the feeling that I saw 780)
I bought MGMAT Sentence Correction and skimmed through the chapters and wrote my 1st MGMAT and got a score of 710.

Then I took a really long break of about 3 weeks because of work and restarted my prep with MGMAT tests and I scored a 640 and a 680 and then a 710.
I took some time to go through my wrong answers and understand where I made mistakes.
In the 2 600s I got the penalty for not completing the quant and verbal parts respectively.

After that I wrote the 6th MGMAT and got a 750 and then yesterday I took a GMATPrep and scored a 760 :)

I have been pretty good at arithmetic and though I am a native of India, I am more comfortable talking in English than Malayalam (my mother tongue) so I guess I had that advantage.

For me it was more of keeping the composure during exam time than learning more formula or grammar rules. So I really doubt whether my prep strategy will help anyone. Besides there is plenty of material in this forum. I went through all the basic math formulae and the basic grammar rules and before each section in the GMAT mentally prepared myself accordingly. I must have written ~500 in each of the AWA essays and followed the structure mentioned in the Chineseburned AWA guide.

For future GMATers my advice is,
1. Go through the entire set of OG books
2. Manhattan GMAT Sentence correction is really good - teaches you where to look for mistakes in the sentence
3. Before writing the AWA go in with the attitude that you have to write 4 paragraphs with a total of 500 words (thats like 20-24 lines)
4. Before the quant session, go in with the attitude that you have to be as quick as possible, do not waste time re-checking, do not waste time trying to find the complete solution in data-sufficiency
5. In the verbal session, the best method is to find all the 4 wrong answers than to figure out which is correct.

They should have given you 780 for your your 51/46 split because my friend got the same score for 51-43 split.
Three extra Verbal points deserve +10 in overall score.

But anyway, GOOD JOB! I'd even say GREAT JOB! :)

I agree. I got a 770 for 51/44, so I'm guessing a 46 is just at the borderline for a 780. congratz nonetheless.

What's w.r.t? Pretty sure "w" means Wharton.

770 congrats! Well done

Thanks, everyone!
Yeah, Someone from this forum got 780 with the same score, but that's ok... I am pretty sure schools won't kick me out because I am not a 780.

@730i - I meant with respect to GMAT :). I swallowed GMAT. I had just returned from the center and was very excited.

Before I forget, I also noticed that in some of the sentence correction questions, I had to choose a SUSPECT answer because there was no RIGHT answer. SUSPECT, RIGHT and WRONG and the 3 possible types of idiom usage according to MGMAT Sentence Correction Guide. So I suppose people should make sure they understand what is ACCEPTABLE and not just what is RIGHT when it comes to idioms.

I perform really well under pressure; 51,46 being higher than all my mock test scores kinda proves that. But when I was attempting the 37th or 38th question in the Verbal section, it clicked me that in a few minutes I will know my GMAT score and I became all tensed! I would advice people to hide the timer and the question no. pointer till about 5 minutes from the end :)

Best of luck, everyone!

I found out today that I got 6.0 in AWA. I finished my AWA at about 04:30 GMT on 27th and I got the mail from GMAT with my official score card at about 11:00 GMT on 29th - that's just over 2 days! I thought it would take more.

I didn't practice AWAs much, I wrote one each of Analysis of an argument and Analysis of an issue the day before the exam. But I did go through Chineseburned AWA help and followed a similar structure. I also went through the sample essays given in the OG to see exactly what they were looking for in a 6 and what was the difference be/w a 6 and a 4.

In the end I figured I would do the following:
1. After reading the question thoroughly, I decided what stand I should take
2. I wrote down 3 reasons why
3. I wrote down examples - fortunately I was able to, I was afraid the topic will be too unfamiliar to get any
4. I started writing the intro with my stand, then 3 paragraphs with the 3 points and examples and then a summary

In the end it came up to about 20 lines, Each line was ~25 words so the total came to ~500 words.
I had about 6-7 minutes in the end where I re-read the passage to check for spelling or grammatical mistakes.

I don't have any essay writing experience at all and do not blog but I do have to write long "technical" mails to senior management and uninitiated customers so I am kind of used to structuring and wording long letter in such a way that a lay man can understand. Nevertheless, I am sure a 6.0 is very easy to get with a little preparation and some tricks :)
