You measure/keep an account of everything you do! Your score was not a surprise
The mini-breaks idea helped me too. Thanks a lot!

2x2, bb, others : Can you please help me understand why Flesch-Kincaid level should be high for AWA? Don't we want to keep the grade level low, making our essay easy to comprehend?

Note : I assume that the F-K level is not a standard used for AWA evaluation!

Hi SpiritualAtheist,

No, Flesch-Kincaid is not a measure that the 2 graders (one human, one computer) use to score your AWA on the GMAT. Given the relatively short time that you have to construct and write the essay, the 'complexity' of your ideas is NOT something that you're measured on (and it's not anything that you need to worry about). There ARE a few basic parameters that the graders assess though, including organization, the type of evidence that you offer to make your point (and the depth to which you explain your ideas) and general accuracy in grammar/spelling/style. It's actually not that difficult to score a 6.0 as long as you're writing in the proper 'style.' We include a template and examples in the EMPOWERgmat Course and there are other free templates floating around.

Given that you scored a 740 ( and that too Manhattan) on the test you took before you even started any real studying, its safe to say you were more than likely going to end up with a 760+

Good for you and Congrats ! :D
