Hi Guys,
I took the test yesterday and scored 790 (Q:50, V:51). The whole process went very smooth. I am very happy with the score, it's about 20 points more than the average of my last few practice tests. However, I got a little disappointed that I couldn't score 51 in maths. Maths has always been my strongest subject. Given my engineering background, almost all the practice questions were no brainer for me. Well, I will stop cribbing and get to my test day experience.

I scheduled for a 5-9 test so that I could get enough sleep before the test. I was at the center about 45 min before time and they got me started right away. I was a little skeptical about test center setup and administrators after reading some posts here, but luckily didnt have to face any such issues. Everyone was polite and helpful, except that I had to go out once during quant to get a new scratch paper.

The essay topics were easy. I had a well prepared argument template. I was not very confident about my issue template, but I got a topic which my wife and I discussed a few days ago. Finished both the esaays 2-3 minutes before time and used the 5 min break to go to the restroom and drink some water.

Quant was my strong area. The questions were way more difficult that OG and Kaplan. Very similar to GMATPrep and PR. There were a lot of number properties DS. As I am quite quick in calculations, I had time to recheck all my question.

Verbal was easier than I expected. RCs and SC's were very much like OG. CRs were harder. On one of the RCs, I spent almost 4 min reading the passage and 3 min on the first question. I was hoping it would be followed by some easier questions and it did.

Went through all the survery questions and then to the score.

Time for some test day tips now:
1) Schedule for an afternoon or evening test so that you can get enough sleep.
2) Drink a lot of water and eat light on the test day. I also went to the gym because I think exercise increases the ability to think and concentrate. Don't worry about taking food or snacks with you for the breaks. I just had enough time to go to the restroom, drink a cup of water and sign back in.
3) Take all the breaks, even if you think you don't need one at the time. Doing 2 sections back to back could be very exhausting.
4) Don't think about how you are performing on test, esp by the level of difficulty of the questions. Just concentrate on the question at hand. Do not spend break time thinking about how you did in the previous section.
5) Plan on spending ~ 4 hrs at the center. Don't get in to the mood of finishing the test quickly, esp as you reach the last few questions of verbal.

I will compile my study plan and some preparation tips shortly. Gtg before my wife gets too mad at me. She has been helping me prepare for the exam for the last 2 months.

Before I end this post, I would like to thank you guys for maintaing this excellent forum. Thanks everyone who replied to my questions about score comparisons and all. Still remember when I scored low on my first Kaplan test and got depressed, until I saw a reply from coffeeloverfreak.

That is a great score!

About the quant, I felt the same way as you and for the same reasons, but who cares about that if your overall score is just great.

Thanks guys.

I though rather than posting my preparation story I would compile a list of the books and softwares I used. The first 10 are roughly in chronological order. The number in parathesis is a how I rate them on a scale of 1-4 (4 being highly recommended). I have also listed pros and cons of each (IMO). Since verbal was my weak area, my feedback would be somewhat skewed.

1) PR Cracking the Gmat (3):
+ Good book to start. Nice strategies.
- few questions, way easier than actual exam

2) Kaplan Higher Score for the GMAT (4):
+ ~50 questions per type, level of difficulty
- some RC/CR questions seem delibrately confusing and their answers and not well explained

3) OG 10e/Powerprep Tests (4+):
+ verbal is very close to the real exam, lots of questions, SCs are a must do.
- quant is much easier than gmat, SC not well explained
I have heard OG11e has much better explanations but didn't get a chance to look at it.

4) Kaplan Grammar Power/PR Grammar Smart (3, if verbal is your weak area): Both are pretty much the same. Pick any.
+ explains basic of grammar,
- few practice questions, not written specifically for GMAT SC.

5) Kaplan CD (3): Would be good if you can do all sections and CATs.
+ lots of difficult questions, timed, builds stamina
- super long RCs. RC sections give you 25 min to do 18 questions which is absurd, some CR and RC explanations were unconving, scores are usually ~100 less than the actual exam

6) Kaplan Verbal Review (3 if you are weak in verbal)
+ lots of challenging practice questions. I think ~50-60 per type.
- quite a bit of overlap with CD, explanations are not very good

7) PR Verbal Workout (1)
- very few problems to work on, nothing really unique about it

8) Manhattan SC Guide (2.5)
+ good consolidated review of SC strategies
- no multiple choice practice questions, i think it's overpriced

9) GMATprep (4+): If I have time to do PP or Gmatprep, I would do latter.
+ closest to the real exam, minimal overlap with OG, i think it's the best predictor of your score.
- no explanations

10) PR online CAT (4):
+ close to the real problems, answers are very well explained, even the wrong choices are explained why they are wrong.
- nothing really negative about these

11) Baron's (1):
+ SC and CR theory are worth a quick look
- questions seem quite different from GMAT so I didnt spend much time on them

12) Arco's (0):
- i only studied some CR and SC sections. many questions didn't make any sense to me. so I just gave up on this.

13) 1000 SC/CR/RC (2): I could only do about first 200 of each. I would have liked to spend more time on it
+ very good collection of questions
- no explanations, once in a while OA appeared wrong to me.

14) GMAT Forums (4+): again, I wish I had more time to spend on these.
+ the questions and discussions are awesome. this is the only place where you can get feedback on your approach to problems, unless of course you are enrolled in a classroom course. I really value that people take out time not only to post questions and answers but also to help each other understand.
- it's somewhat time consuming, i wish there was a better to track which questions I have already attempted and which ones have OA/OE posted.

The question is not can you rise up to iconic! The real question is will you ?
