Can someone please explain why the answer is D and not C ?

Just going by grammar:

A) 8 years after the Argentines become the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, the Olympic Games are --- present tense is wrong.

B) 8 years after the Olympic Games saw the Argentines become the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, now it is --- it has no referent. If we mean the Olympics, it is subject – pronoun number error.

C) 8 years after it saw the Argentines become the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, the Olympic Games is ---.1.pronoun number error 2. SV error


D) 8 years after the Argentines became the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, the Olympic Games are --- correct choice

E) 8 years after the Olympic Games saw the Argentines become the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, now it is --- same error as in A.

WHY D IS CORRECT AND C IS WRONG?

C) 8 years after it saw the Argentines become the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, the Olympic Games is
Hi, olympic games is plural, whereas olympics, alone at times, is taken as singular...
It doe snot have correct antecedents..

D) 8 years after the Argentines became the first basketball team to beat a U.S. Basketball team in the semi-finals of the event, the Olympic Games are
the problems enumerated for C have been rectified ..

so D is better..

I do have a doubt for the source..
Logically understood that the argentines means its basketball team, but "the Argentines became the first basketball team" may not be a correct way to refer citizens of a country as a team..
may be ... it would have been better to say..
"the Argentine basketball team became the first basketball team"

i was very convinced that it is either A or D , but A and D has a single word difference which i over-looked and got confused why 2 choices are same

become vs became

As per the meaning: It is after 8 years of the event when Argentine "became" (past tense) the first basket ball team to beat a US basket ball team, the olympic games are ..

8 years after the Argentines - correct logical usage of "after".
