What is wrong with D? I was confused between A and D, finally chose D.

D is all wrong. "who" changes the meaning to only John adams was appointed to the same post as his father but original intent is both Neumann and John were appointed to the same post as their fathers.

Choice D change the meaning or make the sentence confused because this choice makes sense that John Adam was appointed, not Ronald E.Neumann. Moreover, the tense past perfect also contribute to the other mistake of this sentence. The correct tense is simple present.

D is incorrect as it is having the wrong tense. The correct answer should be in Simple Present. So A is the correct answer.
