A bag of coins contains only nickels, dimes and quarters. There are 38 coins in all. What is the total value of all the coins in the bag?
1)Quarters aacount for half the value of the coins in the bag
2)The value of all the dimes equals the value of all the nickels.

The question doesnt specify the value of each type of coin, howver in the solution they hav taken some value of each type of coin.
How am I supposed to know the value of each kinda coin, also if such coins are specific to ne country's currency...Can such questions be asked in GMAT, in which international students mught not be aware of the value of such type of coins?

solve for the following system of equations:

(1) Q + N + D = 38
(2) 0.25Q - 0.05N - 0.1D = 0
(3) 0.1D-0.05N = 0

remember quaters are 25 cents
dimes 10 cents
nickels 5 cents

I am too lazy now to check the system of equations but we have three equations, 3 variables, so my answer would be C, please double check

we need the value of the coins, no the no of coins. so (i) is sufficient to answer the value of coins in the bag.

The answer is C.

The reason it can not be A is because the total value could be $4.00 as mentioned earler. Or it could be say $3.50, with half of the value coming from 7 quaters and the remainder from 27 nickels and 4 dimes.
