A boat traveled upstream a distance of 90 iles at ana average speed of (v-3) mph and then traveled the same distance downstream at an average speed of (V+3) mph. If the upstream took half an hour longer than the trip downstream how many hours did it take the boat to travel downstream?

I searched the forum and the answer is 2.5 hours, although I have not found a clear explanation for a short cut.

(90/v-3) - (90/v+3) = 1/2
Solve for v = 33

time down = 90/v+3 = 90/36 = 2.5 hrs.

i dont know if my approach works, maybe i just messed the math up somewhere.

I had two euqations:

90/tupstream = v-3

90/tdownstream = v+3

tupstream=tdownstream + 0.5

tdownstream = 90/v+3
