A boat travels from City A to City B upstream and returns from City B to City A downstream. If the speed of the boat in still water is 40 mph and the speed of the stream is 20 mph, what is the average speed of the journey?

a. 30 mph
b. 32 mph
c. 40 mph
d. 47 mph
3. 60 mph

Plug. Say the trip was 240 miles each way.

Upstream, 240 miles at 20 mph, 12 hours.
Downstream 240 miles at 60 mph, 4 hours.

16 hours, 480 miles.

480/16= 30 mph

I did not think to plug a figure in as the total miles. I solved it traditionally.

I got 30 too. given that boat speed=40, speed of the stream=20 then using formula for average speed which is 2ab/a+b upstream will be 40-20 ie 20 mph and downstream will be 40+20 ie 60 mph then using the above formula 2*60*20/60+20= 30 mph
